La-codoped bismuth-based erbium-doped fiber ring laser with 106-nm tuning range

Abstract: 106-nm wideband tunable fiber ring laser using 84.6-cm long La-codoped bismuth-based EDF is reported. The laser emits high output power with 35 dB extinction ratio and a second output emits lower power but exhibits 60 dB extinction ratio.

“…The optical bandwidth and FSR of the FFP filter are about 50 pm (~6.25 GHz) and 110 nm, respectively. Since the gain bandwidth of Bi-EDF is less than 110 nm [9], only one wavelength in the fiber ring laser cavity will be excited. The insertion loss of the FFP filter at the peak of the pass-band is about 2.2 dB.…”

“…In order to achieve better mode field diameter matching, both ends of the Bi-EDF were first fusion spliced to high numerical aperture (NA) SiO 2 fibers (HI980, Corning) before being spliced to conventional SiO 2 fibers (SMF28, Corning). Thus, the fiber-tofiber loss at 1310 nm was 2.3 dB [11], [13]. The Bi-EDF was bidirectionally pumped with two high power laser diodes (LDs).…”

“…Recently, broadband wavelength-tunable fiber lasers play the key role in the related applications of optical device testing, wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) communication, and fiber sensor system [1,2]. In general, the fiber Fabry-Perot filter (FFPF), tunable bandpass filter (TBF), and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) could be used in the fiber ring cavity for wavelength lasing and tuning, when the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), Raman amplifier (RA), semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and hybrid optical amplifier were used inside cavity acting as gain medium [3][4][5][6].…”
