Antes de la famosa adaptación cinematográfica de El perro del hortelano por Pilar Miro, la obra maestra de Lope de Vega había sido llevada con éxito a la pantalla chica en la Rusia soviética. La comedia musical de 1977 del director petersburgués Yan Frid Sobaka na Sene (El perro del hortelano), si bien casi desconocida en Occidente, es considerada un clásico del cine soviético. Este artículo explora las razones detrás de la extraordinaria popularidad de este telefilme en relación con el canon de representación lopesco ruso, así como las condiciones socioculturales específicas de la época del estancamiento. Se argumenta que, al priorizar el tema de las relaciones de género sobre el conflicto de honor, Sobaka na sene logró inscribir nuevos significados culturales en la historia de la condesa de Belflor y su secretario y, por tanto, acercar la obra de Lope a los espectadores soviéticos de finales de los años setenta.
