L-Shaped Slot-Loaded Stepped-Impedance Microstrip Structure UWB Antenna

Abstract: A stepped planar microstrip structure is proposed and demonstrated as a candidate of the ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna in the paper. In the structure, two L-shaped slots are introduced into the rectangular microstrip patch to broaden the current path at both edges of the radiating patch. The impedance bandwidth of the antenna can be extended by using the stepped impedance resonator (SIR) structure at one end of the radiation patch and connecting with the feed line. The symmetrical two I-shaped slots are loaded … Show more

“…A Ceyear vector network analyzer 3672D was used as an alternative to the UWB reader. The two ports of the network analyzer were, respectively, connected to the L-shaped slot-loaded stepped-impedance UWB antennas [41], which were orthogonal to each other to improve the transceiver isolation of the reader. The tag was connected to two orthogonal L-shaped slot-loaded stepped-impedance UWB antennas through two microwave adapters.…”

“…A broader frequency band can be realized by suitably selecting the physical structural parameters due to the use of cost-effective materials and simple topology architectures. The SIR structure could be designed in order to have more diminutive dimensions than the uniform impedance resonator (UIR), which is widely used in RF and microwave devices [11,12]. The respective configurations of both the UIR and the SIR structures are schematically illustrated in Fig.…”

“…In Ref. [11], a new type of UWB-based microstrip antenna has been proposed. More specifically, a rectangular radiator patch has been employed with dual L-shaped slots in order to expand the current path to both sides of the radiating patch.…”

“…The two transmission lines of the microstrip also have different characteristic impedances and electrical lengths, respectively. If the effect of step interruption is neglected, the basic resonance condition of SIR can be obtained from the input impedance of the open circuit terminal [ 35 ]. …”
