L’inventaire des ressources forestières en France : un nouveau regard sur de nouvelles forêts

Abstract

Il ne s'agit dans cet article que des forêts dites « métropolitaines ». QuelQues repÈres HistoriQues Décidé en 1958 par ordonnance du général de Gaulle, pour assurer « l'inventaire permanent des ressources forestières nationales, indépendamment de toute question de propriété (1) », l'Inventaire forestier national (IFn) français a été mis en place à partir de 1960. En 1994, l'IFn est devenu un établissement public à caractère administratif sous tutelle du ministère chargé des forêts. Depuis le 1 er janvier 2012, l'IFn a fusionné avec l'Institut géographique national pour former l'Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière qui a conservé le sigle IGn. La mission d'inventaire forestier est désormais assurée dans le cadre de ce nouvel établissement, conformément aux articles L. 151-1 et R. 151-1 du Code forestier. l'« ancienne MÉtHode » de l'inVentaire Forestier De 1960 à 2004, l'inventaire a été réalisé par département. Les opérations ont démarré en Gironde, inventoriée en 1960-1961, puis dans les Landes l'année suivante. Du fait de la mise en place très progressive des moyens, la première couverture de l'ensemble des départements (1 er cycle) a pris une vingtaine d'années (décennies 1960 et 1970), mais le deuxième cycle (années 1980) et le troisième (années 1990) ont été réalisés en une dizaine d'années chacun. Ainsi, au changement de méthode fin 2004, un quatrième cycle départemental était en cours.
