The goal was to examine demographic differences between former communist regions and other regions of the EU. Besides providing a regional overview of EU's demographic differences, we question whether the subnational approach offers any new insights into the East-West divide. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,155 EU's NUTS3 regions from 2014. These regions are grouped in two groups: regions that were part of a communist country, and other regions. Mortality, fertility and age structure indicators were tested between the two groups of regions. GDP/c was used to control for differences in economic development by segmenting the regions into tree brackets: low, medium, and high. The differences were then tested for each indicator. Regional variation within countries for each indicator was also assessed. The gaps exist at regional level and are the widest with mortality and fertility schedule, regardless of GDP/c. Former communist regions on average tend to be slightly younger. Analysis of regional variation showed that subnational approach was warranted when studying East-West demographic disparities, especially when it comes to fertility schedule.

BACKGROUNDPostponement of first births and an increase in childlessness are significant trends across European countries. While educational differentials for motherhood are well documented, this is less true for fatherhood. OBJECTIVETo compare late first birth and childlessness trends in men and women, across cohorts and by education. METHODSThe analysis relies on French administrative data from the 2016 Permanent Demographic Sample (EDP). Ages at first birth and shares of childlessness are computed by educational levels and between cohorts from 1950 to 1970. RESULTSAcross cohorts, higher-educated women tend to "catch up" after delaying first births, while lower-educated women more often remain childless. For men, there is a slight catch-up among the higher-educated group, especially in the most recent cohorts, but not enough yet to offset the increase in childlessness. Childlessness also remains particularly high among the lower-educated group of men. CONCLUSIONCatching up after a delayed first birth is more frequent among men and especially women with more economic and social resources. While women are more biologically ageconstrained than men are, social barriers may also prevent individuals from entering motherhood and fatherhood at late reproductive ages. CONTRIBUTIONThe contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it considers first births at late ages as an indicator of catching up following postponement of transition to parenthood.

Au cours de l'année 2015, la population a augmenté de 247 000 personnes, contre 305 000 en 2014. Pour la France métropolitaine, le taux de croissance s'élève à 3,7 ‰, il est plus faible qu'en 2014, année pour laquelle il était estimé à 4,6 ‰ (tableau annexe A.1) (1) , d'après les données provisoires de l'Insee.La baisse du taux de croissance de la population (-0,9 point entre 2014 et 2015) se décompose en une baisse du taux brut de natalité (-0,3 point) et une baisse due à la hausse du taux brut de mortalité (-0,6 point). Le solde migratoire est estimé à + 61 000 personnes. Le taux d'accroissement migratoire est positif (+ 1,0 ‰), mais ne contribue qu'à hauteur d'un quart à l'accroissement total.Ainsi, malgré sa diminution, l'accroissement naturel demeure le principal facteur de la croissance de la population française.
