L-carnitine has a protective effect on the colonic mucosa during abdominopelvic radiotherapy in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate histopathologically the radioprotective effect of L-carnitine on the colonic mucosa in rats undergoing abdominopelvic irradiation. METHODS:Thirty-two rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups: intraperitoneal administration of normal saline (group 1) or L-carnitine (300 mL/kg; group 2), followed in groups 3 and 4, respectively, by one dose of abdominopelvic radiation (20 Gy) 30 min later. Rats were sacrificed 5 days after radiation, and their descending colons were resected fo… Show more

“…Also Akpolate and his colleagues (14) reported that ibuprofen and L-carnitine after oral administration had a protective effect by decreasing the severity of radiotherapy-induced duodenal mucosal injury in histopathological evaluation. L-carnitine significantly reduced the radiation induced histopathological damage caused to the colonic mucosa in rats and had a preventive effect on radiation colitis as reported by (Tas et al) (15) .…”

“…Radiation-related acute/chronic colitis induced by the cytotoxic effect of the ionizing radiation on the intestinal mucosa by increasing the levels of free oxygen radicals, antioxidant drugs as L-carnitine and vitamin E prevent free oxygen radical formation, no peroxidative stress effect on the cell and protect against radiation-induced colitis (4) . Radiation-related liver damage observed in 5-10% of patients post radiation exposure by a dose exceeding 30 Gy (5) .…”

“…The predicted enhancement of the 'TnF-α nF-κB Signaling Pathway' suggests radiation-induced enteritis (Table ii). recently, radioprotective agents, such as α-lipoic acid and l-carnitine, have been studied, which alleviate radiation-induced enteritis as a side effect during radiotherapy (34,35). understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms may lead to the development of novel effective radioprotective agents.…”

“…For the analyzed period, the total cost of one package of the levocarnitine preparations in USD fell by 26%: By 21% for oral solutions and 32% for drugs for injections, which is mainly due to significant currency exchange rate fluctuations during 2015 [ Figure 5]. Consequently, the Statistical Data Suggest that there is a Growing Market Demand for Levocarnitine for Oral Administration [13,14] A similar analysis was carried out on the development of the market for glucosamine hydrochloride monoforms during 2015-2017 presented as a powder for oral solution preparation of 1.5 g glucosamine hydrochloride in a sachet of four manufacturers and glucosamine hydrochloride solution 200 mg/ml in 2 ml ampoules of two manufacturers.…”
