Circular economy (CE) research plays an important role in accelerating the CE transition globally and is an essential tool to contribute to climate change adaptation. However, prior CE research is primarily focused on countries in the Global North, whereas CE research in the Global South has been largely unexplored, especially in African countries and contexts. Therefore, this study aims to develop a preliminary research agenda for CE development in African countries by identifying the current body of knowledge on CE, the existing CE research gaps and barriers to conducting CE research in African countries. This research applied a mixed method research design, whereby this study reviewed a total of 275 English and French articles from Google Scholar through a scoping literature review and carried out a quantitative and qualitative survey with 38 CE industry experts working on CE projects in African countries. The findings suggest that South Africa is the front-runner in CE research, with the most relevant publications and ongoing research projects conducted by CE experts. The dominant focus on CE research in South Africa is an urgent call for scholars to conduct country-specific research for additional African countries, especially since a significant number of publications do not distinguish between countries. Based on findings, this study concludes that the current body of CE knowledge is primarily focused on one aspect of CE, circulating materials and products (keep products and materials in use), while there is consensus from published journal papers that there are meaningful gaps in other CE principles such as designing out waste and pollution and regenerating natural systems. Therefore, this paper suggests a list of research topics that can be further investigated. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first attempt to establish a preliminary research agenda for CE across African contexts and countries.

Societal Impact StatementCrop seed exchange networks, shaped by social dynamics, strongly influence the organization and breadth of plant diversity in human‐managed environments. Integrating an urban and market perspective, this study explores the diversity dynamics of a socio‐economically important Central African fruit tree species, the African plum tree. Tree owners in urban, peri‐urban and rural sites use seeds from different origins as their main propagation material, leading to locational variations in genetic diversity and structure. This analysis contributes toward building a framework to inform the research agenda of cultivated African fruit trees, by highlighting the important role of urban centers in safeguarding crop genetic resources.Summary Biocultural factors constrain the dynamics of crop species diversity. Here, we considered different aspects of the social, spatial and temporal dynamics of morphological and genetic diversity in a multi‐purpose perennial crop, the African plum tree (Dacryodes edulis). We assessed (i) how seed exchange networks were organized along urbanization gradients, and how they influenced the distribution of species diversity; (ii) the temporal dynamic of seed exchange network by characterizing species genetic diversity through time. To do so, the study was carried out in Cameroon, where we focused on three urbanization gradients, covering urban, peri‐urban and rural areas, corresponding to three different ethnic groups (Bamileke, Bassa, Beti). We combined interviews with tree owners and nuclear microsatellite‐based genetic analyses. Tree owners from urban and peri‐urban sites primarily used distant seed sources, acquired in the market or from their village of origin, as propagation material, whereas tree owners in rural sites relied primarily on village‐level seeds. In turn, genetic diversity was not evenly distributed, with rural sites exhibiting their own genetic clusters. On the contrary, the genetic diversity of urban sites was enhanced by extensive human‐mediated seed flows. Looking at trees from different age classes, we found that genetic diversity was stable over time. Overall, this first attempt to combine different levels of diversity for African plum trees in commercially connected areas expands the scope for in situ intraspecific conservation by highlighting the contribution of urbanized areas.

In Cameroon, the African plum tree (Dacryodes edulis [G. Don] H. J. Lam) is widely cultivated for its fruits, which contribute significantly to household food security and economy. In order to analyze the links between the social and ecological systems that result in the remarkable fruit diversity, we focused on how the important varietal diversity of African plums was perceived and named by tree owners. We conducted semi‑structured interviews in Center-Cameroon with 142 people belonging to the Beti ethnic group, in urban (Yaoundé), peri-urban and rural areas, and analyzed the data qualitatively and quantitatively. Along this urbanization gradient linking production to consumption regions, 158 different translated names were recorded. Most names (80%) were cited once, but some names based on fruit size and taste were common across the gradient. Although the highest total number of names was recorded in the rural site, many different names were also found along the urban–rural gradient. We did not detect difference in the number of named African plums between respondents with different characteristics. The local classification of African plums among the Beti was structured predominantly according to morphological and organoleptic criteria, but also to symbolic and practical criteria. African plums’ names were based on people’s fruit preferences, that favor large, oily, and blue to black fruits, and disregard pink-colored watery plums. This study is an entry point to explore the rising trade and thus ongoing domestication of the African plum tree from an often neglected perspective, that of local nomenclature.
