“…During the extensive querelle des femmes in Renaissance and early modern Europe, pro‐woman (or feminist) contributions would typically respond to misogynist views by adopting one of two strategies: either by promoting the superiority of women over men on the grounds of sexual difference, or (less frequently) by arguing that men and women are spiritually or intellectually equal while minimizing sexual difference. As noted by Linda Timmermans, the superiority (or difference) approach is a popular genre that finds its roots in Christine de Pizan's work and in Henricus Cornelius Agrippa's (frequently reedited) 1529 treatise De nobilitate & praecellentia foeminei sexus (Timmermans 1993, 247). These authors then paved the way for a wide range of arguments for the superiority of women over men, generally grounded in different accounts of reason and, most of all, of bodily sexual differences.…”
