Kyrgyz-Uzbek Border-Territorial Disputes in the Post-Soviet Period

Abstract

The article discusses the process of settling territorial disputes between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the postSoviet period. It is emphasized that they are a Soviet legacy that arose as a result of the thoughtlessly carried out national-territorial delimitation in the first years of Soviet power. Border-territorial problems between the republics are very relevant, since they have a great impact on interstate relations, regional integration, security and stability in the region. The problem of enclaves plays an important role in bilateral relations. Between the inhabitants of the border regions of neighboring states, skirmishes often occur over land and water resources, pastures, and transport arteries, which sometimes develop into open clashes. It was only after Shavkat Mirziyoyev came to power that there was a breakthrough in the settlement of territorial disputes. This is evidenced by the signing in 2017 of an agreement on the coordination of 1170 (out of 1380) km of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border, which is a great achievement in solving border problems.
