Symbolic Interactions in Popular Religion According to Dimensions of Religiosity: A Qualitative Study

The purpose of this paper was to interpret the usage of symbols in popular religion based on contemporary symbolic interactionism using the reference framework of the symbolic community. The strength of the chosen symbolic interactionist approach is primarily in the research of the role of different dimensions of the religious in understanding the meaning of popular religion in the symbolic community. The qualitative approach and the method of in-depth semi-structured interviews were employed in the research, which responded to the main goal of the research on the meanings the participants of the popular religion attach to the symbolic interactions. A deliberate sample was used for the selection of participants in the popular forms of celebrating the days of Our Lady of Vrpolje, Our Lady of Sinj, and Our Lady of Karavaj as well as the Guardians of Christ’s grave in Vodice, Croatia. According to the results, popular religion, transmitted through visible signs, places believers in a position of physical contact with the supernatural world within a symbolic environment. To achieve this, popular religion displays a need for sacred images, words, sounds, signs, movements, smells. Believers in popular religion seek to establish as simple, intimate, and direct relationship with a deity as possible. The respondents’ answers confirm that the experiential dimension of religiosity is lived primarily on a personal level that precedes the social dimension. For the participants, the religious community has a symbolic character in terms of creating strong bonds between members of society or a social group, especially within the symbolic meaning of a feast day.

Las reflexiones filosóficas de Theodor Adorno sobre la teoría estética nos confrontan con una duplicidad que dificulta la comprensión del vínculo del arte con los problemas de la cultura capitalista. Por un lado, los objetos artísticos son determinados por una singularidad que los diferencia de las prácticas verbales y de la base de validez que nutre las instituciones sociales. Por otro lado, los fenómenos estéticos son hechos que no pueden denegar de su inscripción en un entramado social específico. En este sentido, Adorno presenta a la obra de arte como un «sistema de incompatibilidad» en el que se tensan determinaciones irreconciliables. En el presente trabajo abordamos esta paradoja a partir de la interpretación que ofrece la perspectiva de la estética de la negatividad y desarrollamos sus potencialidades para el pensamiento social contemporáneo.

Abstract:The question of whether computer-mediated communication can support the formation of genuine social systems is addressed in this paper. Our hypothesis, that technology creates new forms of social systems beyond real-life milieus, includes the idea that the technology itself may influence how social binding emerges within online environments. In reaNife communities, a precondition for social coherence is the existence of social conventions. By observing interaction in virtual environments, we found the use of a range of social conventions. These results were analysed to determine how the use and emergence of conventions might be influenced by the technology. One factor contributing to the coherence of online social systems, but not the only one, appears to be the degree of social presence mediated by the technology. We suggest that social systems can emerge by computer~mediated communication and are shaped by the media of the specific environ men t.
