Nitrogen is one of the main inputs of the winter wheat crop (Triticum aestivum L.) in southern Chile. Nitrogen efficient management is basic to optimizing its utilization while decreasing pollution risks and operational costs. Crop response and N use efficiency (NUE, defined as the ratio of yield to mineral N supply, regardless of source) are important for evaluating N requirements of winter wheat, and reaching maximum and economic yields. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of N rate on grain yield, calculate the N rate that maximizes yield, and estimate the optimal grain yield rate and quality of high-yielding winter wheat cv. Kumpa-INIA. Five annual N rates were evaluated in a randomized complete block design during two successive winter wheat cropping seasons on a Vilcún series soil of the Pachic Melanudands family (Andisol) in La Araucania Region, Chile, and subjected to intensive annual crop rotation. Significant effects (P ≤ 0.01) of N rate on grain yield and quality were found. The optimal physical N rate (OPR) in both seasons ranged from 290 to 339 kg ha-1 , whereas optimal economic N rate (OER) ranged from 248 to 274 kg ha-1 , with yields between 10.2 and 10.1 t ha-1. Nitrogen use efficiency associated to OER was high in both seasons (36.9 and 41.2 kg grain kg-1 N) and fluctuated in similar ranges. Nitrogen rate increased hectoliter weight and grain protein, but decreased NUE.

RESUMEN 'Kiron INIA' es un nuevo cultivar de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) obtenido en el Programa Nacional de Trigo, Centro Regional de Investigación (CRI) Carillanca, del Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA). Es un trigo de altura mediana, de ciclo tardío, resistente al polvillo estriado (Puccinia striiformis West. f. sp. tritici Erikss) y al oidio (Blumeria graminis D.C. f. sp. tritici Marchal), y moderadamente sensible al polvillo de la hoja (Puccinia triticina. f. sp. tritici Erikss y Henn) y septoria (Mycosphaerella graminicola (Fuckel) Sand). Es un cultivar invernal de alto rendimiento, con buenas características de calidad para panificación directa, que heredó un alelo de tolerancia a la acidez del suelo de un parental. Sus hojas son de color verde ligeramente pálido, con hoja bandera semi erecta, de abundante cerosidad (glauescencia) en el haz. La espiga es de color blanco, decumbente, forma paralela, densidad alta, compacta y con barbas en todo su longitud. El grano es de forma redondeada, tamaño mediano, y color rojo pálido. La altura de la planta adulta varía entre 95 cm y 105 cm, con un promedio de 100 cm, y con un tallo de muy buena resistencia a la tendedura. Es un trigo de alto rendimiento (12,9 t ha -1 ), superando incluso al testigo comercial en diferentes localidades y estaciones.Palabras clave: cultivar, trigo invierno, rendimiento, calidad panadera. ABSTRACT 'Kiron INIA' is a new wheat cultivar (Triticum aestivum L.) developed by the National Wheat Program at the Regional Experimental Center (CRI) Carillanca of the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA). The cultivar has medium plant height and late cycle; it is resistant to yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis West. f. sp. tritici Erikss) and oidium (Blumeria graminis D.C. f. sp. tritici Marchal), and moderately sensitive to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina f. sp. tritici Erikss y Henn) and septoria ( Mycosphaerella graminicola (Fuckel) Sand). It is a high yielding winter wheat with good quality characteristics for direct baking, containing an allele of tolerance to soil acidity inherited from a parent. Its leaves are pale green, with a semi-erect flag leaf, with abundant cerosity (glaucosity) in the beam. The spike is white, decumbent, parallel in shape, high density, compact, with awns along its full length. The grain is round in shape, medium in size, and pale red in color. The height of the adult plant varies between 95 cm and 105 cm, with an average of 100 cm, and with Chilean J. Agric. Anim. Sci., ex Agro-Ciencia (2019) 35(1): 50 49-56. a stem of very good resistance to lodging. It is a high yielding cultivar (12.9 t ha -1 ) exceeding the commercial check in different localities and seasons.

Marker-assisted breeding for TaALMT1, a major gene conferring aluminium tolerance to wheat

Aluminium toxicity in acid soils is the main limitation to crop production worldwide. In wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), the Al-activated malate transporter (TaALMT1) gene located on chromosome 4DL is associated with malate efflux and Al-tolerance. To introgress Al-tolerance from the breeding line CAR3911 into the high yielding Al-sensitive cultivar Kumpa-INIA, phenotypic and molecular characterizations of gene/QTL underlying Al-tolerance in CAR3911 followed by marker-assisted backcrossing (MAS-BC) were undertaken. Al-tolerant backcross (BC) lines were selected using the functional marker ALMT1-4 designed immediately upstream of the TaALMT1 coding region. Foreground and background selections using ALMT1-4 and microsatellite markers were conducted. Linkage and sequence analyses suggest that the TaALMT1 gene could underly the Al-tolerance in CAR3911, possessing the same promoter type (V) as the Al-tolerant genotypes Carazinho and ET8. The MAS-BC strategy allowed the selection of Al-tolerant lines with the smallest introgressed region (6 cM) on 4D and the highest recurrent parent genome (RPG) (98 %) covering 2 194 cM of the wheat genome. The homozygous BC 3 F 2 line named Kumpa-INIA-TaALMT1 expressed a 3-fold higher Al-tolerance than its isogenic line Kumpa-INIA at 40 μM Al in the hydroponic solution, and similar to CAR3911 and Carazinho. The MAS-BC strategy was successful for the introgression of the TaALMT1 gene into Kumpa-INIA in only three BC generations, shortening the breeding cycle to 24 months, which promises to increase wheat production and a greater yield stability in the acid soils of Southern Chile.
