Discernment is one of the concepts that urge each and everyone to think critically and anew. The concept of a never-ending spiral of thinking is very familiar in the circles of reformed churches. This concept is also known from the wisdom literature in the Old Testament. The realisation that you do not know, means approaching the ability to grasp something of wisdom. In order to find out what the Old Testament is saying about 'discern', I did a textual research on the two Hebrew words: ‫בין‬ and ‫.בחן‬ I apply the results of this research to the context of the church (with specific reference to the 'Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika' [NH Church]) attempting to find out what the church's responsibility is with regards to what is really important (i.e. discernment). InleidingHierdie studie het voortgespruit uit 'n versoek van die kerk (Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika) om meer te wete te kom oor wat in die Ou Testament geskryf is oor 'onderskeid'. Dit is nodig om te stel dat daar nie slegs een spesifieke teologie in die Ou Testament is nie 1 , nog minder in die hele Bybel 2 . Hierdie studie gaan nie probeer om so iets vas te stel nie, maar eerder om te kyk of die moontlikheid dalk bestaan dat daar 'n baie fyn, goue draadjie deur die Ou Testament loop met betrekking tot dit waarop dit werklik aankom, en spesifiek in die God-mens-verhouding.Die vraag na dit waarop dit werklik aankom -om te onderskei, is eintlik baie eie aan hoe die meeste protestante kerke nog altyd teologie beoefen het. Die term 'kritiese teologie' word onder andere 3 gebruik wanneer daar gevra word na die kerk se teologie. Dit beteken ook dat daar nie 'n vrees is om vrae te vra nie. Om te onderskei is om dit te doen wat die reformasie van die begin af nagestreef het, om weer te kyk, om te hervorm, om terug te gaan na die Bybel as bron en vertrekpunt.As ons krities dink, vra ons vrae en toets ons antwoorde. Die proses van kritiese navorsing vind ons in alle vakdissiplines. Dit kom onder andere ook voor in die opvoedkunde 4 en in die ekonomiese wetenskappe 5 . Coghlan en Brannick (2001:19) stel die proses van kritiese vraag en oplossing in die vorm van 'n spiraal voor (Figuur 1).Dit is die proses van 'n vraagstuk wat lei tot die beplanning van 'n aksie, die aksie word uitgevoer en dan word dié betrokke aksie geëvalueer, waarna gereflekteer word oor die antwoorde, die proses van nuut dink, wat dan weer daartoe lei dat die sirkel nooit gesluit word nie, maar voortdurend vorentoe spiraal. So 'n proses van refleksie is ook 'n baie eerlike proses. Indien dit kollaboratief kan plaasvind, waar alle rolspelers geleentheid kry om te reflekteer, is die resultate gewoonlik beter. From the investigative premise of a Foucauldian archaeology of knowledge, this article attempts to unearth the layers of ideas which constituted the Hervormd approach to doing theology over the past century. Digging into seemingly disassociated bodies of theological precedents, the article anatomizes four layers of ideas in a series of diverse orientations towards theology, namely the (1) ethical, (2) confessional and (3) dialectical orientations, and stemming from a Kantian orientation in particular, (4) the validity of 'the philosopher's voice' in the often tense relationship between theology and philosophy. Respecting the inexplicit nature of this multifarious kind of theology, the author calls for an ongoing estimation of the diversity of voices within the Hervormd approach, rejecting any attempt to integrate these different layers of thought into a monolithic enterprise of knowledge about God and the world.

This article asks several questions: What is distinctive about Mark’s description about the rending of the curtain in the Jerusalem Temple during Jesus’ crucifixion?; What is his rhetorical strategy in doing so?; What role does the temple play in Jewish religion? What role does the Temple play in Jesus’ ministry and message?; and What is the context of the narrative about the torn temple curtain? The conclusion is that Mark utilises the description to demonstrate God’s judgement on the worship at the temple, but at the same time illustrates how the way between heaven and earth is opened at the moment of the death of God’s Son.Markus se onderskeidende beskrywing van die geskeurde tempelgordyn. Verskeie vrae kom in hierdie artikel aan die bod: Wat is onderskeidend in Markus se beskrywing van die gordyn in die Jerusalemtempel wat tydens Jesus se kruisiging skeur?; Wat is die evangelis se retoriese strategie?; Watter rol speel die tempel in Joodse godsdiens?; Watter rol speel dit in Jesus se bediening en boodskap?; en Wat is die konteks vir die narratief binne die Evangelie oor die gordyn wat skeur? Die gevolgtrekking is dat Markus die beskrywing benut om God se oordeel oor die tempel te demonstreer, maar terselfdertyd illustreer dit ook hoe die weg tussen hemel en aarde oopgebreek word in die oomblikke toe God se Seun sterf.
