This paper presents findings from field trial of a mobile application called 'Dhana Labha' in a rural Sri Lankan community. Dhana Labha was designed to be used by the community members to manage their personal finances, oversee their performance in managing multiple microfinance loans and assist in loan collection. We distributed the application among thirty eight microfinance clients and studied their use over a period of six months. Our findings show that the use of Dhana Labha had a positive impact on existing local practices and financial awareness while prompting the participants to develop unexpected new practices around microfinance workflows. Our findings highlight the importance of understanding existing sociocultural practices for designing applications, as they strongly affect and shape the use of technology in a constrained setting.

We describe the design of a novel mobile phone-based application for loan management in a resource-constrained setting. In this setting, a social enterprise manages autorickshaw loans for drivers, taking charge of collections. The design was informed by an ethnographic study which revealed how loan management for this financially vulnerable population is a daily struggle, and loan payment is a collaborative achievement between collectors and drivers. However, drivers and collectors have limited resources to-hand for loan management. To address this, we designed Prayana, an intermediated financial management app. Prayana shares the principles of many persuasive technologies, such as education, motivation, nudges, but is designed for users with a range of print, technical, and financial literacies and embodies the core design sensibility of enhancing users' agency. Furthermore, it does not put the onus solely on drivers to better manage their money, instead it aims to enhance the collaborative work of loan management, supporting both the drivers and collectors.

While HCI for development (HCI4D) research has typically focused on technological practices of poor and low-literate communities, little research has addressed how technology literate individuals living in a poor infrastructure environment use technology. Our work fills this gap by focusing on Lebanon, a country with longstanding political instability, and the wayfinding issues there stemming from missing street signs and names, a poor road infrastructure, and a nonstandardized addressing system. We examine the relationship between technology literate individuals' navigation and direction giving strategies and their usage of current digital navigation aids. Drawing on an interview study (N=12) and a web survey (N=85), our findings show that while these individuals rely on mapping services and WhatsApp's share location feature to aid wayfinding, many technical and cultural problems persist that are currently resolved through social querying. We discuss our results in light of problems that any map user encounters in poor infrastructure environments.
