Krill Oil’s Protective Benefits against Ultraviolet B-Induced Skin Photoaging in Hairless Mice and In Vitro Experiments

Jongkyu Kim,
Namju Lee,
Yoon-Seok Chun
et al.

Abstract: Krill oil (KO) shows promise as a natural marine-derived ingredient for improving skin health. This study investigated its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-wrinkle, and moisturizing effects on skin cells and UVB-induced skin photoaging in hairless mice. In vitro assays on HDF, HaCaT, and B16/F10 cells, as well as in vivo experiments on 60 hairless mice were conducted. A cell viability assay, diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity test, elastase inhibition assay, procollagen content tes… Show more

“…The resultant percentage of inhibition can be increased if the concentration of drug bixin in the manager is proportionately increased in the formulation. Such types of inhibitory anticancer activity depending on the concentration of the drug can be found in the previous work ( Je et al, 2022 , Kim et al, 2023 ).…”

“…It contains many polyphenols, so it is also involved in antioxidant functions, and it is considered an important plant for skin health amid global warming. Accordingly, it has been evaluated to have high potential as an inner beauty and cosmetic material [33][34][35][36]51,52,[92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100].…”

“…Notably, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, especially UVB, from the sunlight is the main cause of exogenous skin photoaging. Prolonged UVB radiation produces reactive oxygen species and free radicals accumulation, which in turn results in DNA damage, DNA synthesis disorder, and cell death [1,2]. Besides, UVB radiation can generate inflammatory cytokines including IL-6, IL -2, IL-33, IL -8, TNF-α and IL-1, which accelerate skin aging [3].…”
