Abstract: Herein is communicated an electron donor-acceptoracceptor (D-A1-A2) triad that provides the first proof-of-concept for a photoinitiated molecular circuit. Upon photoexcitation into an optical charge-transfer transition between D and A1, subsequent thermal electron-transfer from A1to A2 is followed by geometric rearrangement in the D + -A1-A2charge-separated state to form an ionpair contact. Die Distanzabhängigkeit des intramolekularen Elektronentransfers (ET) wird typischerweise in linearen Modellverbindungen mit starrer Geometrie untersucht, wobei Studien über molekulare Kabel, die einen 908 8-Winkel aufweisen, nur sehr selten sind. Über Variation des Substitutionsmusters an einer Spirobifluoreneinheit als zentralenB r ückenbaustein konnten zwei isomere Serien von Donor-Brücke-Akzeptor-Verbindungen mit näherungsweise linearer bzw. gewinkelter Geometrie erhalten werden. Der lichtinduzierte ET erfolgt über einen raschen Lochtransfer über die Oligofluorenbrücke über Distanzen von bis zu 70 in beiden Serien. Ungeachtet der konformationellen Flexibilitäti st ein direkter ET (durch den Raum oder das Lçsungsmittel) selbst in der gewinkelten Serie vernachlässigbar.D ie Geschwindigkeitskonstante des ET in der gewinkelten Serie ist unabhängig von der Anzahl der Fluorenbrückeneiheiten, was einem geschwindigkeitsbestimmenden Tunnelschrittd urch die Spirobifluorenecke zugeschrieben werden kann. Dieser Befund besitzt große Relevanz fürm ultidimensionale ET-Systeme sowie (supramolekulare) Gitternetze, in denen die Verbindungen der einzelnen molekularen Kabel einen 908 8-Winkel aufweisen.

Recent Developments on Understanding Charge Transfer in Molecular Electron Donor‐Acceptor Systems

Charge transfer (CT) in molecular electron donor-acceptor systems is pivotal for artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis, photovoltaics and fundamental photochemistry. We summarized the recent development in study of CT and discussed its application in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The direct experimental proof of the spin multiplicity of the charge separated (CS) state with pulsed laser excited time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy was discussed. Experimental determination of the electron exchange energy (J) of the CS state, with magnetic field effect on its yield or lifetime was introduced. The electron spin transfer accompanying the CT, studied with pulsed EPR spectra was briefly discussed. Tuning of the CT yield and kinetics with selective vibration excitation of the linker (the bridge) with IR pulse was presented. Above all, these studies show that there are more fun than simply monitoring the formation of the cations and anions and the kinetics or CS yields in this area.

Electron Transfer around a Molecular Corner

The distance dependence of electron transfer (ET) is commonly investigated in linear rigid rod-like compounds, but studies of molecular wires with integrated corners imposing 90° angles are very rare. By using spirobifluorene as a key bridging element and by substituting it at different positions, two isomeric series of donor-bridge-acceptor compounds with either nearly linear or angled geometries were obtained. Photoinduced ET in both series is dominated by rapid through-bond hole hopping across oligofluorene bridges over distances of up to 70 Å. Despite considerable conformational flexibility, direct through-space and through-solvent ET is negligible even in the angled series. The independence of the ET rate constant on the total number of fluorene units in the angled series is attributed to a rate-limiting tunneling step through the spirobifluorene corner. This finding is relevant for multidimensional ET systems and grids in which individual molecular wires are interlinked at 90° angles.
