KP4 to control Ustilago tritici in wheat: Enhanced greenhouse resistance to loose smut and changes in transcript abundance of pathogen related genes in infected KP4 plants

Abstract: HighlightsVirus gene kp4 increased resistance against Ustilago tritici up to 60% in GM wheat in the greenhouse.KP4 resistance is quantitative, depends from infection pressure (dose and race).Expressing kp4 by Ubi-promoter may affect mRNA amount of pathogen related genes. No undesired phenotypic effects have been obious in KP4-wheat.

“…Stinking or smut is one of the most important seed-borne diseases of wheat . One of the wheat pathogens responsible from the Ustilaginales is Tilletia caries , which causes the stinking smut, and Ustilago tritici causes loose smut . When the seeds are germinated, the latent hyphae also begin to germinate, and with the growth and development of wheat, the disease spreads upward through the growth point and invades the ear of wheat .…”

“…Roussel tritici Jensen (UST), is one of the most serious diseases on wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) globally. The disease is favored by moist and cool climate during anthesis (Quijano et al, 2016). This fungus converts the spike floral tissues to fungal teliospores, causing yield losses equivalent to the percent smutted spikes (Green et al, 1968; Singh, 2018).…”

“…Loose smut of wheat caused by the basidiomycete fungus Ustilago tritici , is one of the most serious diseases on wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) globally. The disease is favored by moist and cool climate during anthesis (Quijano et al, 2016). This fungus converts the spike floral tissues to fungal teliospores, and the carrier seeds of loose smut are the only way of transmission (Kumar et al, 2018).…”

“…The yield losses of a single plant are nearly 100% after the onset of disease, and the general disease rate is 1–5%. When the incidence is serious, it is more than 10%, which can reduce the yield of wheat by 5–20% (Quijano et al, 2016). With the popularization of wheat planting area, the damage caused by loose smut in wheat has become more serious, and it has gradually become one of the most harmful diseases in wheat cultivation (Knox, Menzies & Sharma, 2012).…”
