Integration of information systems is a prerequisite for efficient collaboration within and between organizations. Despite intensive research on integration issues in Information Systems research, companies nowadays still encounter considerable challenges in integration projects. The question for the reasons still engages researchers and practitioners. The paper at hand investigates current integration problems by deriving a framework for integration problems from literature research and applying it for the analysis of concrete cases from business practice. The examples are described in detail in explorative case studies examining three integration projects from different industries and with different objectives. From the comparison of theoretically derived and practically proven integration problems, the paper identifies integration problems that have been insufficiently addressed so far and discusses open challenges of integration in the Information Systems discipline.

Zusammenfassung. Das Internet und darauf aufbauende Technologien eröffnen neue Potentiale für zwischenbetriebliche Informationssysteme und fördern die elektronische Unterstützung von Geschäftsbeziehungen. Dabei bleibt jedoch das grundsätzliche Problem bestehen, daß der Hauptinvestor jeweils eine gewisse Anzahl an Teilnehmern benötigt, um eine angemessene Verzinsung der für die Systementwicklung und -implementierung eingesetzten Ressourcen zu erreichen. Da es sich im zwischenbetrieblichen Kontext bei den Transaktionspartnern in der Regel um entscheidungsautonome Organisationseinheiten handelt, kann davon ausgegangen werden, daß die kritische Masse nur dann erreicht wird, wenn sich für die Teilnehmer selbst wiederum eine angemessene Verzinsung der für Anbindung und Systemanpassung notwendigen individuellen Aufwendungen ergibt.Dem Hauptinvestor stehen dabei eine Reihe von Gestaltungsoptionen zur Verfügung, denen jeweils unterschiedliche Erfolgsfaktoren zuzuordnen sind. In der Vergangenheit dominierten einerseits auf Zwang ausgerichtete, stark kompetitive Vorgehensweisen und andererseits kooperative Strategien, wie etwa die freiwillige Beschränkung der Anzahl an Zulieferbeziehungen im Rahmen vertrauensbildender Maßnahmen. Mit dem Aufkommen offener Kommunikationsstandards und neuer Technologien lassen sich diese von relativ geringen zusätzlichen finanziellen Belastungen gekennzeichneten Strategien möglicherweise nicht mehr aufrechterhalten, und es wird notwendig, neue Optionen in Betracht zu ziehen, wie etwa die Subventionierung einzelner Systemteilnehmer oder die Verbesserung des Gesamtsystems, die jeweils sowohl kompetitive als auch kooperative Elemente aufweisen.Der vorliegende Beitrag diskutiert diese These am Beispiel zwischenbetrieblicher elektronischer Katalogsysteme, wie sie in jüngster Zeit im Kontext elektronischer Absatzund Beschaffungssysteme sowie elektronischer Märkte an Bedeutung gewinnen. Abstract. The Internet and related technologies open newopportunities for inter-organizational information systems to support business relations. However, in order to achieve an adequate return on the investments for system design and implementation, the primary investor still needs to sign up a significant number of participants. In an inter-organizational setting the decision units are usually autonomous organizations. Given that, critical mass can only be reached if the participants achieve an adequate return on their respective investments such as linking to the inter-organizational system and customizing their IT infrastructure accordingly.Several adoption strategies exist, each with a different set of success factors. Prevailing choices in the past have included competitive, often coercion-based strategies, as well as more cooperative arrangements which limit the number of supplier relations, and other trust-building mechanisms.
