Köppen Climate Zones in China Over the Last 21,000 Years

Abstract: The regions that encompass similar climates can be regarded as one climate zone. There are a variety of methods to classify climate regions, such as cluster analysis (Zhang et al., 2017; Zhang & Yan, 2014) and threshold values of certain climate variables (Feddema, 2005; He et al., 2019). The most frequently used scheme is the Köppen climate classification scheme, which was the first quantitative classification of world climates proposed by Wladimir Köppen in 1900 (Köppen, 1900; Kottek et al., 2006) along with… Show more

“…Previous studies have suggested that TraCE‐21ka has a reasonable ability to capture the major features of the reconstructed climatic evolution in the historical period and to reproduce the observational large‐scale patterns of the modern climatology (e.g., Jiang et al., 2020; Jiang & Yan, 2020; Shi & Yan, 2019; B. Wu et al., 2021; Q. Yan & Zhang, 2017). In East Asia, the evolution of the EASM index over the last 20,000 years has been depicted by TraCE‐21ka, and the simulated results are supported by proxy records at the orbital timescale (Wen et al., 2016).…”

“…The mean annual temperature ranged from 6 to 10 °C. The climate type of the region is BWk based on the Köppen climate classification [ 24 ]. The native vegetation is mainly composed of sand-borne and drought-tolerant plants.…”

“…China is a vast country with an area of 9.63 × 10 6 km 2 and has a great variety of climates, varying from tropical, subtropical to temperate and polar [37]. The topography descends from the west to the east, forming a three-step "staircase" according to altitude.…”
