In Deutschland leiden etwa 10 Prozent aller Männer unter Inkontinenzbeschwerden. Während bei den 18-40-Jährigen nur etwa vier Prozent betroffen sind, sind es bei den über 60-Jährgen immerhin knapp 18 Prozent (Beutel et al. 2005). Harninkontinenz ist somit vor allem ein Altersphänomen, von dem Frauen deutlich häufiger betroffen sind als Männer (Herzog u. Fultz 1990). Infolge des demographischen Wandels ist in Zukunft mit einer steigenden Prävalenz der Harninkontinenz zu rechnen. Harninkontinenz betrifft vor allem ältere Männer. 9.1 Definition Harninkontinenz wird allgemein als ungewollter Harnverlust definiert, der in unterschiedlichen Schweregraden auftreten kann. Abhängig von den Ursachen und vom Auftreten wird zwischen drei Hauptformen der Harninkontinenz unterschieden: Dranginkontinenz wird auch als "Reizblase" bzw. "überaktive Blase" bezeichnet. Sie liegt vor, wenn ein plötzlicher, starker Drang zur Blasenentleerung auftritt, selbst wenn die Harnblase nicht vollständig gefüllt ist. Ursächlich ist eine Störung der Steuerung der Blasenmuskulatur. Bei einer Stress-oder Belastungsinkontinenz (unwillkürlicher Harnverlust unter Belastung) ist der Harnblasenverschluss geschwächt. Eine Druckerhöhung im Bauchraum, z.B. hervorgerufen durch Husten, Niesen, Lachen oder abrupte Körperbewegungen, bewirkt einen unwillkürlichen Harnverlust. Misch-Inkontinenz: Belastungs-und Dranginkontinenz können auch in Kombination auftreten. Diese Form der Inkontinenz wird als Misch-Inkontinenz bezeichnet.
