Koilocytes are enriched for alkaline-labile sites

Abstract: This study investigated possible variations in the chromatin structure of koilocytes resulting from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Alkaline-labile sites (ALS) were detected with the DNA breakage detection–fluorescence in situ hybridization (DBD-FISH) technique using a whole human genome DNA probe obtained from individuals without koilocytosis. The variable levels of ALS present were measured quantitatively using image analysis after whole-genome DNA hybridization. A significant increase in the number of… Show more

“…Bi/multinucleation is strongly indicative of HPV infection [32] and, in this study, it is most frequent with LSIL or inferior histopathological outcome, but not significantly associated. On the other hand, hyperkeratosis showed a significantly higher frequency of prevalence for a severer histopathological result.…”

“…All these advances have made it possible to transfer basic biology and scientific knowledge to the clinical setting. 23 , 58-60 This has also revolutionized our way of thinking and studying the nucleus as a microenvironment that houses an integrated network of chemical reactions, where fine regulation and probability, combined with the contribution of external stimuli, allow the realization of specific transcriptional programs and cell phenotypes.…”

“…In the last-three-years sample from the European Journal of Histochemistry , several articles concerned the search for one or more diagnostic and prognostic indicators specifically marking a given disease, 415 but other were focussed on experiments aimed at identifying the molecular bases of the pathogenetic process, 1620 or at assessing the metastatic potential of tumour cell populations, 21,22 or at describing the effects of therapeutic interventions. 2327 Most of these studies were performed by light (essentially conventional or confocal fluorescence) microscopy, but electron microscopy and ultrastructural immunohistochemistry has also been used for investigating functional changes in cells from different tissues or under different experimental conditions.…”
