Known HIV status among adolescent women attending antenatal care services in Eswatini, Ethiopia and Mozambique

Abstract: Background Antenatal care (ANC) clinics remain important entry points to HIV care for pregnant women living with HIV—including adolescents. Prior knowledge of their HIV status at ANC enrollment is crucial to providing services for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. We examined known HIV status of pregnant adolescents and women in other age groups at ANC enrollment. Methods A descriptive study of routinely reported PMTCT data… Show more

“…The current academic literature heavily focuses on how ANC services are entry points to HIV care and knowledge. 14,15 However, what remains under-researched is the importance of knowledge of preventative MTCT on women's health-seeking behaviours within the context of SSA. To address this void in the literature, this study examines the association between women's knowledge of MTCT of HIV and their decision to initiate ANC visitation in the first trimester, complete the recommended eight visitations and give birth in a health facility using a nationally representative dataset.…”

“…AGYW who are pregnant or mothers experience significantly higher risk of HIV infection than their peers [5][6][7][8]. Additionally, although antenatal care commonly serves as a critical entry point for HIV testing, low rates of disclosure to partners and use of maternal anti-retroviral therapy (ART) is a risk for onwards HIV transmission to children and future sexual partners [9][10][11][12][13].…”
