Knowledge translation mechanisms in open innovation: the role of design in R&D projects

Abstract: Purpose. This paper investigates the role of design as a knowledge translation mechanism in R&D-oriented open innovation. In particular, the paper intends to look at how design can be used as a means of knowledge transfer among various stakeholders who speak different languages and have divergent needs and interests in a process where knowledge openly flew across the boundaries of a high number of organizations.Methods. The paper combines the insights from theory with the empirical evidence gathered by adoptin… Show more

“…[18] The use of art provides researchers with the opportunity to successfully convey complex research-based ideas to nontechnical audiences, who are better able to appreciate the design compared to academic writing. [19] ABKT approaches in the healthcare field can be used to promote understanding of the subjective aspects of illnesses, including dementia, and evoke emotional responses among viewers by providing an embodying experience. [20] Previous studies focused on a single artform, such as visual arts , dance and choreography, and 360 • videos and virtual reality.…”

“…El diseño hace referencia a una forma importante de transferir las ideas o conocimientos (Simeone, Secundo, & Schiuma, 2017). Además, éste ayuda de manera significativa en el desarrollo de nuevos productos.…”

“…acting at different levels of the complex network. Design and the use of design outputs such as artifacts, sketches, visual representations or prototypes (Simeone et al 2017) enable solutions to be embedded (at any innovation maturity stage) within specific urban contexts and is able to develop and work with them in order for them to be relevant in other contexts. This embedding represents a (design) process in between meanings and functions (see the 3D model), which shapes value by infrastructuring practices in real life, which are targeted by the innovation process:…”
