Introduction Child abuse constitutes all forms of physical as well as emotional maltreatment resulting in harm to the child’s health and overall development. Parental awareness plays a significant role in the prevention of child abuse. The objective of this study was to find out the awareness of mothers regarding child abuse. MethodsThis descriptive cross sectional study was carried out among mothers attending a Pediatric Outpatient Department of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital Kathmandu, Nepal. A total of 162 mothers having their children of aged one to 16 years were selected as a sample using non-probability convenient sampling technique. Data was collected by face to face interview using semi-structured interview schedule. ResultsFindings of the study revealed that majority of mothers could state different types of abuse as physical abuse (72.8%), psychological abuse (78.4%), sexual abuse (71.6%), but 53.1% of mothers were aware about neglect, 48.8% of mothers considered that relatives could abuse their child. In total, 49.1% of mothers had moderately adequate, 26.4% had inadequate and 23.9% had adequate level of awareness regarding child abuse. No significant association was noted between the level of awareness and mothers’ age, ethnicity, religion and occupation. The level of awareness of mothers was significantly associated with nuclear family type (p=0.03). ConclusionThe mothers are aware of child abuse at moderate level. Conducting awareness programmes in community, regarding child abuse focusing on child neglect is recommended.

Background: Child abuse is a serious problem causing physical, social and psychosocial harm to the children. Aim: To evaluate the effect of educational protocol in improving mothers' knowledge, practice and attitude about child abuse. Design: A quasi-experimental research design [pretest-posttest] was used. Setting: At the out patient's clinics at Zagazig University Hospitals. Sample: A purposive sample consisted of 100 mothers participated in this study and they were chosen according to inclusion criteria. Tools: Four tools were used; Interview questionnaire sheet, Mother's knowledge about child abuse, Child Abuse Prevention Attitude Scale, Check List for Expressed Practices on Child Abuse. Results: Revealed that most of the mothers were secondary education, house wives and from rural areas, there were statistical significant differences between pre\posttests regarding knowledge, practice, attitudes for the mothers regarding child abuse and there was negative association among the incidence of child abuse and the level of knowledge, practice, and attitude of their mothers. Conclusion: The applying of educational protocol for mothers was effective in enhancing their knowledge, practice, and attitudes regarding child abuse. Recommendation: Educational pamphlets about child abuse and its prevention strategies should be given to mothers in different settings such as, clinics, worksites and health care centers, and also establishing child abuse prevention programs at schools could be helpful.

Background:The issue of child abuse is a major global social problem within and outside the homes and among all socio-economic groups of both the developed and the developing nations of whole world.Objective: study investigated the effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme on Knowledge regarding child abuse among mothers Method: One group pretest post test design was used to conduct the study among mothers totally 100 mothers with 3-6 years of children were selected by Purposive sampling technique. Study conducted at Malkapur Anganwadi, Karad. Data was collected by using structured questionnaire. Pre-test was conducted to assess the existing knowledge of mother regarding child abuse. Then Planned Teaching Programme was conducted on child abuse. Post-test conducted after seven days of planned teaching programme.Results: The pre-test mean was 11.75 where post-test mean was 15.81 and calculated t value was 12.907 found significant at the level of p<0.0001. Conclusion:Planned teaching programme was found to be very effective for improving knowledge of preschooler mothers regarding child abuse.
