Testaments of Female Natural Contraceptives: An Update on the Usage of African Herbal Remedies

Traditional herbal methods of birth control have been used by many traditions for hundreds of years because they offer several benefits over modern methods like synthetic hormones, intrauterine devices (IUD), and surgery. This literature review set out to determine which African medicinal plants are used as contraceptives, with the most emphasis on Nigeria and some of the phytochemical constituents that are implicated in the anti-fertility. In this research, we used an elibrary search and pertinent books to filter the published literature on the topic of plants with antifertility and contraceptive effects. More than 70 plants were shown to have a wide range of anti-pregnancy effects, including acting as abortifacients, inhibiting sperm motility, and even imitating or interfering with female reproductive hormones. Based on this review, over 15 substances have been identified as potentially having contraceptive effects, including ferutinin, quinovic acid glycosides, nimbolide, resveratrol, gossypol, etc. The lack of rigorous scientific studies and clinical trials that authenticate the efficacy and safety of natural contraceptives has led to persistently low rates of adoption despite the many benefits and various initiatives by government and developmental entities to increase their adoption in Nigeria. In conclusion, increased advocacy is required for scientists to intensify efforts in natural-based contraceptive research for proper validation and complementary effort with current conventional contraceptives.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of papaya leaf boiled water in reducing pain in post-partum mothers in the work area of PTMB Nurfitriana. Research Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental with purposive sampling with a sample of 32 people. Data techniques included in Uivariate analysis using frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using calculations. The results of this study found that respondents in the control group and the intervention group in the experimental group after being given papaya leaf boiled water, that most of the post-partum mothers experienced no pain as many as 6 people, 8 people experienced mild pain levels and 2 people experienced moderate pain levels. There was a decrease in pain in the intervention group so that it proved the effectiveness of giving papaya leaf boiled water to pain levels in postpartum mothers at TPMB Nurfitriana.

Background:No prior research has explored the use of medicinal plants for treating maternal and paediatric health-related ailments in the Nkomazi Local Municipality. This study aimed to investigate the utilization of medicinal plants by traditional healers in the region for specific maternal and paediatric-related conditions.Methods: Ethnobotanical data were collected between July 2021 and October 2021 using semi-structured questionnaires and guided field walks with traditional healers. Plants were identified by collecting plant specimens from the wild and existing literature. Quantitative analysis was done through quantitative ethnobotany indices such as relative frequency of citations. Results:The study documented 19 plant species from 13 families commonly used for maternal and paediatric ailments, with the Fabaceae family being the most prevalent. Roots were the most frequently utilized plant part, followed by bark and leaves. Decoction was the predominant method of preparation, and oral administration was the most common route of administration. The plant species with the highest relative frequency of citation (RFC) were Capparis tomentosa, Grewia monticola, and Ximenia caffra.Conclusions: Nineteen plant species from thirteen families were identified as commonly used for maternal and paediatric related ailments, in rural communities of the Nkomazi Local Municipality. The study also identified four previously undocumented plant species. The findings underscore the need to educate traditional healers about sustainable harvesting practices and provide potential avenues for scientific investigation and cross-cultural comparisons.
