Knowledge of Ischemic Stroke Risk Factors and Warning Signs After a Health Education Program by Medical Students

Abstract: Background and Purpose-A delay in recognizing early warning signs (WS) and risk factors (RF) of ischemic stroke causes a delay in treatment. We evaluated knowledge of RF and WS and the impact of an educational program by medical students. Methods-We first surveyed individuals to determine knowledge of WS and RF. Then, after a 6-month education program, knowledge was reassessed.

“…Knowledge of stroke risk factors and warning signs has been reported in previous studies with more than 30% of the respondents mentioning at least 3 correct warning signs and stroke risk factors [8,[10][11][12][13]. However, a better performance in stroke knowledge was found when comparing our findings with results from previous evaluations carried out in our country [5,6].…”

“…Knowledge of stroke symptoms and warning signs was assessed with a previously piloted questionnaire [6]. The questionnaire included general sociodemographic information and cardiovascular risk factors from the participants, 5 open-ended questions (Table 1), as well as if the subject had previously received information regarding stroke and where they had received it.…”

“…These findings suggest that it is necessary to continuously remind patients of risk factors, independent of age and health condition. Education programs can improve knowledge of ischemic stroke [25]. …”
