Knowledge graph of wastewater-based epidemiology development: A data-driven analysis based on research topics and trends

Abstract: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has contributed significantly to the monitoring of drug use and transmission of viruses that has been published in numerous research papers. In this paper, we used LitStraw, a self-developed text extraction tool, to extract, analyze, and construct knowledge graphs from nearly 900 related papers in PDF format collected in Web of Science from 2000 to 2021 to analyze the research hotspots and development trends of WBE. The results showed a growing number of WBE publications in … Show more

“…Infectious Disease Knowledge Graph: This is a comprehensive database of infectious disease genomics and is designed to help researchers and clinicians identify genetic mutations that are associated with specific infectious diseases. [222,223] The graph integrates data from multiple sources, including genomics, proteomics, and clinical data, to provide a comprehensive view of the molecular networks that underlie infectious diseases.…”

“…Currently, scholars from various fields both domestically and internationally have conducted numerous studies on the issue of foresight for emerging technologies [2,3]. In the initial research stage of emerging technology foresight, the Delphi method method [4] and the analytic hierarchy process [5] are often used, and valuable expert experience is used to propose indicators to describe the characteristics of emerging technologies, which provides a solid foundation for subsequent research.…”

“…Firstly, on the detection of small molecules, WBE first gained recognition for monitoring the consumption of illegal drugs within the population (Gao et al, 2023). A scheme of how this consumption is estimated from wastewater analysis is shown in Supplementary Figure S1.…”

“…However, a growing number of studies now employ WBE to monitor substance use in specific communities, focusing on locations such as educational institutions, prisons, music festivals, and sporting events, as well as on special dates, such as, holidays (Verovšek et al, 2020). Advancements in technology and theory have expanded the application of WBE to include surveys on the consumption of legally sold addictive substances like alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine (Gao et al, 2023).…”
