Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards prevention and early detection of chronic kidney disease

Abstract: Nurses need to be involved in development of protocols for screening and intervention programmes, taking into consideration the cultural issues and the financial status of individuals at risk for kidney disease. Governments should adopt a public health policy for chronic kidney disease that supports programmes for screening and programmes for improving public awareness for kidney disease prevention.

“…A cross-sectional design was used to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of hypertensive patients towards prevention and early detection of CKD by using a newly developed instrument called CKD Screening Index [10, 11]. This index is a reliable and valid instrument which provides scores on three domains including: knowledge, attitudes and practices [10, 11].…”

“…Interestingly, a large majority of patients with renal dysfunction are not even aware of having CKD. It has been proven by several studies that the lacks of knowledge about CKD, along with the negative attitudes and practices have resulted in delayed diagnosis of CKD [10–12]. This in turn has only accelerated the development of end-stage renal disease, leading to increased dialysis costs as well as other sequela of the disease, including psychological disorders which ultimately negatively affects the health outcome [11, 12].…”

“…Men require detailed information about the pros and cons of PSA screening in order to make an informed decision. Khalil and Abdalrahim (2014) concluded that improvement in population understanding about chronic disease is needed to increase their awareness and practices to make appropriate and effective decisions towards health promotion and better quality of life.…”

“…Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are the leading important risk factors for CKD in developing countries [7]. Many studies have confirmed this association -these two diseases share risk factors such as smoking and obesity, and promote vascular alterations that increase the risk for developing kidney impairment [8].…”
