Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices towards Lightning in Bangladesh

Abstract: Despite the significant number of fatalities and injuries, there is currently a lack of data on public knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding lightning in Bangladesh. This study aims to assess the public’s knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) towards lightning in the country. A total of 1641 individuals participated in an online KAP survey. Where appropriate, the Kruskal–Wallis or Mann–Whitney U test, Spearman’s rank correlation, and logistic regression models were performed. About 65% of the survey… Show more

“…Even though cross-sectional research does not involve conducting experiments, it is often used to explain results in the physical and social sciences, as well as in a number of commercial fields. Since Dhaka city was the epicenter of COVID-19 and many social workers work in this city, we hypothesized that the majority of our research population would be from Dhaka (Chisty et al, 2021 ; Rahman et al, 2022a , b ; Rahman et al, 2021b , c ). A non-probability sample of Bangladeshi social workers who were adults (18 years or older) was chosen.…”

“…Bangladesh is vulnerable to climatic and geophysical catastrophes (Ozaki, 2016 ). There are numerous cyclones, floods, storm surges, lightning, fires, and disease outbreaks (Hsan et al, 2019 ; Rahman et al, 2021b ; Rahman et al, 2022b ). Bangladesh, which shares a border with India and is densely populated, is battling a novel coronavirus.…”

“…However, knowing the resident’s knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of DF is critical for efficient vector-borne disease control [ 21 ]. The KAP model, developed in the 1950s, has been widely used to assess survey respondents’ understanding of a subject [ 8 , 9 , 22 , 23 ]. The simple design, normative data, and precise report make this survey approach convenient [ 24 ].…”

“…Some studies have explored the spatiotemporal variability, climatic factors, and the lightning-death link in Bangladesh [4,[14][15][16][17]. Studies also showed the importance of the public perception of lightning in Bangladesh [2,18]. However, the high risk and frequent fatalities in Bangladesh have prompted more research into public perception and lightning-related actions, which is necessary to reduce the lightning risk [12].…”

“…Even though we lack data regarding lightning strikes on university students, there have been cases where university students might be killed by lightning due to risky activities [22]. Additionally, studies indicate that students must be educated about lightning safety [18,23].…”
