Knowledge and Prevention of Farmer Households to the Japanese Encephalitis Infection in Badung Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia

Abstract: It was reported that 326 Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases in Indonesia in 2016, majority cases (69.3%) occurred in Bali. It shows that Bali is a prone-area to JE incidence. Previous studies noted that JE is closely related to rural and suburban areas where rice culture and pig farming coexist. This study aims at i) determining knowledge and preventive practices of JE by farmer households; (ii) observing types of mosquitos around farmer households; and (iii) mapping the potency of JE spread using geo-spatial in… Show more

“…However, the presence of stagnant water, poor drainage, and open sewage sites in Denpasar ofer ideal locations for the mosquitoes to breed in urban areas, increasing the likely occurrence of mosquitoborne diseases, including JE [36]. Several studies have identifed the presence of the necessary mosquito vectors for JEV in Bali [14,[37][38][39]; however, further studies are required on mosquitoes that feed on pigs and hence are potentially involved in the transmission of JEV to humans.…”

“…Similarly, the cases in animals is also suspected to be high as the dominated amplifying hosts were acted by pigs and the virus is spread by Culex spp. mosquitoes as the vector in Bali [15,16] . However, the diagnostic of the disease is screened mainly using serological tests for detecting the antibodies against the JEV in both humans and animals.…”
