Determinants of oral rehydration salt utilization among under-five children with diarrhea in Ethiopia: A multilevel mixed-effect analysis

Background: Oral rehydration salt therapy is a critical intervention to reduce mortality and morbidity of children with diarrheal diseases. However, it remains underused in low- and middle-income countries. In Ethiopia, only less than half of children with diarrheal diseases were treated with oral rehydration salt solution. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the determinants of oral rehydration salt utilization among children with diarrhea in Ethiopia. Method: A secondary data analysis was done using the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. A weighted sample of 1227 children who had diarrhea in the last 2 weeks with their index mothers during the 5 years survey was included in the study. A multilevel mixed logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with oral rehydration salt utilization. Finally, statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05. Result: The overall prevalence of oral rehydration salt utilization for children with diarrhea was 29.5%. In this study, age of mother ⩾35 (adjusted odds ratio = 1.66, 95% confidence interval = 1.05, 2.64), mothers with formal education (adjusted odds ratio = 1.52, 95% confidence interval = 1.09, 2.11), media exposure (adjusted odds ratio = 1.72, 95% confidence interval = 1.25, 2.38), living in Metropolitan regions (Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa (adjusted odds ratio = 1.76, 95% confidence interval = 1.14, 2.69)), and small peripheral regions (Afar, Gambela, Somalia, Benishangul-Gumuz (adjusted odds ratio = 1.69, 95% confidence interval = 1.22, 2.34)) were associated with higher odd of oral rehydration salt utilization for children with diarrhea. Conclusion: The study concludes that the age of mothers, educational status of the mother, media exposure, and regions of mothers were determinants of oral rehydration salt utilization for children with diarrhea. Therefore, media advertising regarding diarrhea management should be scaled up to increase oral rehydration salt utilization for children with diarrhea. Special attention to socio-cultural constraints or beliefs regarding diarrhea management should be given to mothers from large to center (Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities, and People’s Region, and Harari) regions.

Diarrhea is a common cause of child-related hospitalization and mortality among children under the age of five in South Africa. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge and practices of caregivers regarding prevention and management of diarrhea among children under the age of five in the Thulamela Municipality of South Africa. A quantitative approach using a descriptive cross-sectional survey was used. A questionnaire was adopted to collect data from caregivers at thirty primary health-care facilities using convenient sampling. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0 was used to analyze data. Most of the respondents have fair knowledge about diarrhea, oral rehydration therapy/salt sugar solution and its usage during diarrheal episodes. However, most of them (81.7%) do not use the salt sugar solution when their children have diarrhea. Almost all the respondents practice a hand washing hygiene for themselves and their children; 97.2% do not reheat cooked food before feeding their children; 95.5% do not drink untreated water as their source of drinking water is the municipal supply. The practices of these respondents do not reflect their knowledge in terms of the use of oral rehydration solution/salt and sugar solution. Further efforts should be made to educate caregivers on the mode of transmission of diarrheal pathogens.

Background: Diarrhoea is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among the under-five age group in Bangladesh. Effective by ORS treatment can reduce diarrhoea-related mortality and unnecessary hospitalization, for which role of mothers is important. The use of oral rehydration saline (ORS) is greatly affected by mothers’ knowledge and attitude towards using it in treating their children. Objectives: Assessment of the knowledge, attitude and practice of the mothers about ORS for better management of diarrhoea in children. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the department of Paediatrics of Monno Medical College Hospital, Manikganj, during the period from January to December, 2022. Data were collected from 300 mothers by face-to-face interview by a questionnaire. Finally, collected data were analyzed, using SPSS software version 20. Results: Majority (195, 65.0%) of the children’s age were in between 6 month to 2 years. Most (143, 47.7%) of the mothers completed primary education. About two-thirds of the mothers (193, 64.3%) resided in rural areas. In this study, most (213, 71.0%) of the mothers always used ORS during the attack of diarrhoea, 281(93.7%) mothers had adequate knowledge about ORS, 253(84.3%) had knowledge about preparetion of ORS, 235(78.3%) informed to know when to administer ORS and 170 (56.7%) knew the exact amount of ORS to administer. Conclusion: Positive attitude was seen among the participant mothers regarding the use of ORS. But mothers’ knowledge and practices regarding its administration was insufficient.
