Knowing the cause of death (CoD) plays an important role in developing strategies and interventions to prevent early mortality. In Vietnam, the CoD of the majority of patients who acquired infectious diseases remains unknown. While there are challenges that hinder the use of complete diagnostic autopsy (CDA) in practice, minimally invasive autopsy (MIA) might be a promising alternative to establish CoD in Vietnam. The current study aims to explore knowledge of and attitudes toward CDA and MIA in the wider population in Vietnam. The study was cross-sectional, using structured questionnaires that were disseminated electronically via several websites and as paper-based forms in a national level hospital in Vietnam. Descriptive analyses were performed and where appropriate, comparisons between the healthcare workers and the general public were performed. We included 394 questionnaires in the analysis. The majority of participants were under age 40, living in major cities and currently practicing no religion. 76.6% of respondents were aware of CDA and among them, 98% acknowledged its importance in medicine. However, most participants thought that CDA should only be performed when the CoD was suspicious or unconfirmed because of its the invasive nature. For MIA, only 22% were aware of the method and there was no difference in knowledge of MIA between healthcare workers and the wider public. The questionnaire results showed that there are socio-cultural barriers that hinder the implementation of CDA in practice. While the awareness of MIA among participants was low, the minimally invasive nature of the method is promising for implementation in Vietnam. A qualitative study is needed to further explore the ethical, socio-cultural and/or religious barriers that might hinder the implementation of MIA in Vietnam.

Background: Clinical autopsy is an invaluable tool useful to identify causes of death and to uncover unknown and unexpected diseases which aids in raising awareness of common and rare diseases in a community. Clinical autopsy is essential to study pattern of morbid diseases that aids in formation of effective healthcare policies. Aim: To investigate the views of the general public on clinical autopsies in order to determine general conceptions and misconceptions that may aid in further a discussion and investigations. Methodology: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Department of Forensic Medicine, Dow International Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi Pakistan from October 2022 till March 2023. Data was collected from 300 participants using a 15-item questionnaire distributed to general population from various parts of Karachi selected by convenient sampling. Results: 46% were aware of term clinical/medical autopsy. 77% acknowledged medical and social role of clinical autopsies. Less than 50% could differentiate between clinical and medico legal autopsy. 50% are of the opinion that autopsy should not be conducted in natural deaths. 55% and 64% of the participants were of the opinion that clinical autopsy can improve future lives of people and provide diagnostic and curative strategies respectively. Participants of the study were unsure about the Islamic perspective of autopsy. 57% agreed to give consent for autopsy in society’s best interest. Conclusion: The large majority is uncertain about autopsy given their religious and personal views but it also reveals many acknowledge its possible utility in medicine and in bereavement process. Therefore, despite lack of research and public discourse, it provides us with data that may encourage and aid further research and discussion about acceptance of autopsy as a viable diagnostic tool. Although many households in the Kathmandu Valley rely on household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) to obtain drinking water, the safety of treated water has not been evaluated in actual usage. Therefore, we assessed the performance and maintenance of five HWTS methods used in 101 households. The choice of HWTS methods by households was primarily influenced by the raw water source, that is, jarred water users opted for boiling and groundwater users selected reverse osmosis with ultraviolet irradiation (RO-UV). While boiling and electric dispensers (ED) did not remove inorganic contaminants (ammonia nitrogen, arsenic, and manganese), ceramic candle filters (CCF) and RO-UV reduced them moderately. The HWTS methods reduced E. coli and total coliforms (TC) by 95.8 and 84.1%, respectively, but 11.8 and 69.3% of treated water samples remained positive for these two bacteria. Combined methods (CM) and RO-UV showed an inferior TC reduction compared to the simpler HWTS methods, boiling, CCF, and ED, possibly due to difficulties with regular maintenance and storage contamination. Therefore, it is recommended to choose simpler HWTS methods that meet the requirements of the household’s water sources rather than more expensive and difficult-to-maintain methods, which should be chosen only if the raw water contains high concentrations of inorganic contaminants.
