Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito de uma intervenção educativa, sobre avulsão de dentes permanentes, no nível de conhecimento de participantes de uma equipe do SAMU. Métodos: Participaram acadêmicos de Medicina que compunham a equipe do SAMU de Juiz de Fora (MG). A intervenção educativa foi realizada por meio de uma palestra com duração de 15 minutos. Para coleta dos dados foi utilizado um questionário, contendo 13 perguntas sobre avulsão dentária, aplicado em três etapas: antes da palestra (T0), imediatamente após a palestra (T1) e quinze dias após a palestra (T2). Foi realizada análise descritiva e teste McNemar para análise estatística (p < 0,05). Resultados: A amostra foi composta por 36 indivíduos. Nenhum participante relatou ter prestado atendimento a um caso de avulsão dentária. Trinta e quatro acadêmicos informaram não ter recebido orientações anteriores sobre o que fazer diante desse episódio e 35 afirmaram que esse conhecimento é necessário para o médico do SAMU. Houve aumento na porcentagem de acertos após os acadêmicos assistirem a palestra educativa (T1), para sete questões avaliadas. As mesmas questões também apresentaram maior percentual de acertos quinze dias após a palestra educativa (T2). Não houve diferença na capacidade dos acadêmicos reimplantarem um dente avulsionado tanto imediatamente após a palestra educativa (T1), quanto quinze dias após as orientações (T2) (T0-T1: p = 0,999; T0-T2: p = 0,999). Conclusão: A palestra educativa influenciou de forma significativa à melhora do conhecimento sobre avulsão dentária dos acadêmicos de Medicina que fazem parte da equipe do SAMU-JF.

Dentists play an essential role in the treatment of dental and periodontal traumatic injuries by providing early and correct treatment. The purpose of the present study was to assess the level of knowledge of dental residents regarding dental trauma. The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Dental Medicine within the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iasi, Romania on a sample of 366 residents in General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontology. To assess their knowledge, a questionnaire was created containing 18 questions about the clinical signs and therapy of dental trauma, with a focus on tooth avulsion. A very low level of knowledge (<25%) was found only for the type of splinting required to maintain an avulsed tooth on the arch. The highest number of correct answers was provided by the residents in Periodontology. Physiological serum as storage medium was recognized by a percentage of 75.9–80% of the subjects, and 60–77% of them recognized pulp necrosis as complication of dental avulsion. The study underlines the need to introduce in the curriculum of all categories of residents additional information, not only in the already existent theoretical form, but also as possible scenarios of various clinical situations.

Dental undergraduate students' ability in the diagnosis of root fractures: Comparative analysis of different imaging methods

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic ability of dental undergraduate students to detect horizontal and oblique root fractures (ORFs) using different imaging techniques. Materials and methods: Nine teeth were selected and randomly divided in three groups in order to create a fracture line without fragments separation: control (without fracture), horizontal root fracture (HRF), and ORF. The root fracture was created using perpendicular force and was confirmed by transillumination. A model with two adjacent teeth was created, and different imaging techniques were performed: conventional periapical radiograph; mesially and distally shifted periapical radiographs; cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT). Twenty students that had participation on dental trauma clinic at the year of 2019 were invited to identify root fractures by a five-point scale: (i) fracture definitely not present, (ii) fracture probably not present, (iii) uncertain whether fracture is present or not, (iv) fracture probably present, and (v) fracture definitely present. Data were analyzed by Kappa test for agreement evaluation. Results:Comparing each student to the gold standard, there was a variation in reproducibility and performance from poor to substantial (0.042-0.667). Reproducibility values ranged from poor to good for all periapical radiographs both in the diagnosis of ORF (−0.33-0.667) and in HRF (0-1). Conclusions: In CBCT images, the students' ability was lower in HRF detection in comparison with the oblique ones. The students showed limited capacity to diagnose root fractures; however when CBCT was used, the performance was more satisfactory than when periapical radiographs were used.
