Knowledge and Attitudes towards Epidural Analgesia among Women of Childbearing Age in Jazan, Saudi Arabia: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study to Identify Predictors through Multivariate Modeling

Abstract: Epidural analgesia (EA) is a central nerve blockade technique. It is linked to a significant reduction of labor pain and side effects. This study was designed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes towards EA among women of childbearing age (18–45 years) in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, and identify predictors through multivariate modeling. A random sampling technique (n = 680) was used for this cross-sectional, self-administered survey. A previously validated online questionnaire was distributed. After establishin… Show more

“…We noted a significant correlation between a higher monthly income (over 15,000 SAR) and a previous receipt of EA. However, unlike findings from a study in Jazan that showed a correlation between EA exposure and women aged 30 to 40 living in urban areas with higher educational levels [ 12 ], we did not find a significant correlation with other demographic variables. This suggests that economic factors may influence the accessibility of EA.…”

“…Regarding preferences for EA, 53.3% of participants were considering it for their current pregnancy. This desirability rate for EA indicates some acceptance of the method in Taif, albeit lower than in some regions but higher than in others [ 10 , 12 , 13 ]. Younger women, those with fewer children, and university graduates showed a higher likelihood of choosing EA, contrasting with findings from Al Khobar [ 10 ].…”

“…In this study, we found that the respondents possessed knowledge about the benefits of using pain relief during labor, both non-pharmacological and pharmacological. In the study conducted by Babiker et al 61.8% of respondents had correct knowledge of epidurals [ 48 ]. Still, a systematic review of the literature by Thomson et al revealed that women need information about risks and benefits associated with all available pain-relief methods [ 49 ].…”

“…Moreover, a 2023 study in Jazan revealed that women of childbearing age knew little about EA [6]. Likewise, a 2022 study in Jeddah involving 105 participants in the King Abdulaziz Medical City revealed a lack of awareness of EA among pregnant women [7].…”
