The current study sought to investigate the joint effect of maternal marital status and type of household cooking fuel on child nutritional status in sub-Saharan Africa. Data in the children’s files of 31 sub-Saharan African countries were pooled from the Demographic and Health Surveys collected between 2010 and 2019. The outcome variables were three child anthropometrics: stunting (height-for-age z-scores); wasting (weight-for-height z-scores); and underweight (weight-for-age z-scores). The joint effect of maternal marital status and type of household cooking fuel on child nutritional status was examined using multilevel regression models. The results were presented as adjusted odds ratios (aORs) at p < 0.05. The percentages of children who were stunted, wasted and underweight in the 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa were 31%, 8% and 17%, respectively. On the joint effect of maternal marital status and type of household cooking fuel on stunting, we found that compared to children born to married mothers who used clean household cooking fuel, children born to single mothers who use unclean household cooking fuel, children born to single women who use clean household cooking fuel, and children born to married women who used unclean household cooking were more likely to be stunted. With wasting, children born to single mothers who used unclean household cooking fuel and children born to married women who used unclean household cooking fuel were more likely to be wasted compared to children born to married mothers who used clean household cooking fuel. With underweight, we found that compared to children born to married mothers who used clean household cooking fuel, children born to single mothers who used unclean household cooking fuel, children born to single women who used clean household cooking fuel and children born to married women who used unclean household cooking were more likely to be underweight. It is imperative for the governments of the 31 sub-Saharan African countries to double their efforts to end the use of unclean household cooking fuel. This goal could be achieved by promoting clean household cooking fuel (e.g., electricity, gas, ethanol, solar, etc.) through effective health education, and promotion programmes. The attention of policymakers is drawn to the urgent need for children’s nutritional status policies and programmes (e.g., dietary supplementation, increasing dietary diversity, improving agriculture and food security) to be targeted towards at-risk sub-populations (i.e., single mothered households).

Background Skin-to-skin care is placing an unclothed or diaper-only newborn baby on the mother’s bare chest, covered with a warm blanket. The World Health Organization recommends immediate, uninterrupted, and continuous mother–newborn skin-to-skin care practice almost immediately after birth. Despite this recommendation, separation of the newborn from the mother is common in many public health institutions. There was a limited study that examined the prevalence of skin-to-skin care practice and associated factors in Ethiopia. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of skin-to-skin care practice and its associated factors among postpartum mothers in Gurage Zone public health centers, Southern Ethiopia, 2020. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in twenty-two public health centers of Gurage Zone from January 1st up to 30th, 2020. A total of 382 postpartum mothers were selected using a systematic sampling technique. Data were collected using structured and pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaires. Data were entered into EpiData version 3.1.0 and exported to SPSS version 23 for analysis. Both bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify significant factors associated with skin-to-skin care practice. Statistical significance was declared at a P-value of <0.05 with a 95% confidence level. Results About 35.3% (95% CI; 31.3%–40.4%) of new-borns were received skin-to-skin care practice. Being urban residence [AOR=2.23, (95% CI; 1.17–4.23)], normal newborn birth weight (≥2500gm) [AOR=3.1, (95% CI; 2.15–3.89)], early initiation of breastfeeding [AOR=2.93, (95% CI; 1.29–6.64)], colostrum feeding [AOR=4.19, (95% CI; 2.01–8.73)], and having mothers good knowledge on skin-to-skin care practice [AOR=8.51, (95% CI; 4.32–16.75)] were some of factors associated with mother to newborn skin-to-skin care practice. Conclusion The proportion of mother newborn skin-to-skin care practice was low in the study area. Mothers resided in the urban areas, normal newborn birth weight, early initiation of breastfeeding, colostrum feeding, and having good knowledge of the mothers about skin-to-skin care were factors associated with skin-to-skin care practice. Therefore, health care workers should counsel mothers on optimal breastfeeding practice and enhance maternal awareness regarding the merits of skin-to-skin care practice before discharge from the health facilities are recommended.

Background: Unintended pregnancy can cause pregnancy termination, which leads to safety risks. The purpose of the study was to analyze the factors that influence unintended pregnancies in Indonesia.Methods: The analysis unit was women aged 15-49 years old who gave birth to the last 5 years. The sample size was 36,472 women. In addition to unintended pregnancy as the dependent variable, other variables analyzed were the place of residence, age, education, husband/partner, employment, wealth, parity, pregnancy termination, the person deciding woman's access to health care, heard about family planning messages on radio, television, and newspaper/magazines. The final stage analysis uses binary logistic regression.Results: Women in urban areas were 1.834 times more likely than women in rural areas to experience an unintended pregnancy. The 20-24 age group was 0.202 times more than the 15-19, while the 45-49 was 1.916 times compared to the 15-19 to experience an unintended pregnancy. Secondary education women were 1.447 times more likely than no education women, while the poorer women were 1.190 times more likely than the poorest women to experience an unintended pregnancy. Parity was found to be a strong determinant of unintended pregnancy. History of pregnancy, decision making by husbandpartner, and heard about family planning messages on radio and television in the last few months are risk factors for unintended pregnancy.Conclusions: Eight variables affect unintended pregnancy, namely age, education, wealth, parity, pregnancy termination, the person deciding woman's access to health care, and heard about family planning messages on radio and television.
