Knockout of 1p protons from 12C induced by the (e, e'p) reaction

The mechanism of incoherent π 0 and η photoproduction from complex nuclei is investigated from 4 to 12 GeV with an extended version of the multicollisional Monte Carlo (MCMC) intranuclear cascade model. The calculations take into account the elementary photoproduction amplitudes via a Regge model and the nuclear effects of photon shadowing, Pauli blocking, and meson-nucleus final-state interactions. The results for π 0 photoproduction reproduced for the first time the magnitude and energy dependence of the measured rations σ γ A /σ γ N for several nuclei (Be, C, Al, Cu, Ag, and Pb) from a Cornell experiment. The results for η photoproduction fitted the inelastic background in Cornell's yields remarkably well, which is clearly not isotropic as previously considered in Cornell's analysis. With this constraint for the background, the η → γ γ decay width was extracted using the Primakoff method, combining Be and Cu data [ η→γ γ = 0.476 (62)

We present new data probing short-range correlations (SRCs) in nuclei through the measurement of electron scattering off high-momentum nucleons in nuclei. The inclusive 4 He/ 3 He cross section ratio is observed to be both x and Q 2 independent for 1.5 < x < 2, confirming the dominance of two-nucleon short-range correlations. For x > 2, our data support the hypothesis that a previous claim of three-nucleon correlation dominance was an artifact caused by the limited resolution of the measurement. While 3N-SRCs appear to have an important contribution, our data show that isolating 3N-SRCs is significantly more complicated than for 2N-SRCs.

The first measurements of the induced proton polarization, Pn, for the 12 C(e, e ′ p) reaction are reported. The experiment was performed at quasifree kinematics for energy and momentum transfer (ω, q) ≈ (294 MeV, 756 MeV/c) and sampled a recoil momentum range of 0-250 MeV/c. The induced polarization arises from final-state interactions and for these kinematics is dominated by the real part of the spin-orbit optical potential. The distorted-wave impulse approximation provides good agreement with data for the 1p 3/2 shell. The data for the continuum suggest that both the 1s 1/2 shell and underlying ℓ > 1 configurations contribute.
