Knockdown of VvMYBA1 via virus-induced gene silencing decreases anthocyanin biosynthesis in grape berries

Abstract: Anthocyanin in grapevines, regulated by structural and regulatory genes, determines the colour of grape berries and is a key factor in wine quality. The transgenic approach is a useful strategy for elucidating gene function. However, it is difficult to obtain transgenic fruit trees, including grapevines. Viral vectors offer an effective strategy for overcoming this challenge. In this study, we successfully knocked down the VvMYBA1 gene in ‘Red Globe’ and ‘JiZaoMi’ grape berries via virus-induced gene silencing… Show more

“…R2R3-MYB proteins directly bind to the promoters of structural genes or to genes encoding bHLH regulators and activate their gene expression. For instance, two MYB genes, VvMYBA1 and VvMYBA2 , control the anthocyanin biosynthesis through regulating VvUFGT expression in grapevine [ 16 , 17 ]. Similarly, PAP1 and PAP2 in Arabidopsis [ 18 , 19 ], MdMYB10 in apple [ 20 ] and FvMYB10 in strawberry [ 21 ] are positive regulators to anthocyanin biosynthesis.…”
