Resumo:A região da Serra de São Pedro-SP é uma das zonas mais típicas das cuestas na Bacia do Paraná. Embora as cuestas sejam tidas como uma forma erosiva, a confi guração geometrizada do relevo e do sistema fl uvial da área até o Rio Piracicaba sugere um controle tectônico das formas. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verifi car o possível controle tectônico no relevo da Serra de São Pedro e do Baixo Piracicaba, focalizando a ação da neotectônica, tendo como hipótese a existência de um forte controle da tectônica pós-paleogênica sobre as formas. Os resultados mostraram que a atividade neotectônica na área é caracterizada principalmente pela atividade de falhas transcorrentes e normais subverticais WNW-ESE, W-E, NW-SE e NE-SW, ambas de pequeno rejeito e de impacto direto reduzido na morfologia do relevo. Apesar da baixa magnitude da atividade das falhas, a neotectônica controla a direção dos canais de primeira e segunda ordens e provoca pequenas perturbações de depósitos fluviais quaternários, além de gerar anomalias no perfi l longitudinal dos rios, infl exões dos canais de drenagem, pequenos basculamentos de blocos e a formação e degradação de terraços fl uviais nos afl uentes da margem direita do Piracicaba. Embora a gênese da Serra de São Pedro, dos grandes rios e dos altos níveis de terraços esteja relacionada, sobretudo, a grandes estruturas muito antigas (Pré-Neógeno), a fatores litológicos e às variações paleoambientais do Cenozóico, a neotectônica é responsável por mudanças signifi cativas na confi guração geomorfológica da área, sobretudo na rede de drenagem, que, no meio tropical, é o principal agente esculturador da paisagem. Abstract. Changes in the steepness of river profiles or abrupt vertical steps (i.e. waterfalls) are thought to be indicative of changes in erosion rates, lithology or other factors that affect landscape evolution. These changes are referred to as knickpoints or knickzones and are pervasive in bedrock river systems. Such features are thought to reveal information about landscape evolution and patterns of erosion, and therefore their locations are often reported in the geomorphic literature. It is imperative that studies reporting knickpoints and knickzones use a reproducible method of quantifying their locations, as their number and spatial distribution play an important role in interpreting tectonically active landscapes. In this contribution we introduce a reproducible knickpoint and knickzone extraction algorithm that uses river profiles transformed by integrating drainage area along channel length (the so-called integral or χ method). The profile is then statistically segmented and the differing slopes and step changes in the elevations of these segments are used to identify knickpoints, knickzones and their relative magnitudes. The output locations of identified knickpoints and knickzones compare favourably with human mapping: we test the method on Santa Cruz Island, CA, using previously reported knickzones and also test the method against a new dataset from the Quadrilátero Ferrífero in Brazil. The algorithm allows for the extraction of varying knickpoint morphologies, including stepped, positive slope-break (concave upward) and negative slope-break knickpoints. We identify parameters that most affect the resulting knickpoint and knickzone locations and provide guidance for both usage and outputs of the method to produce reproducible knickpoint datasets.

Streams commonly respond to base‐level fall by localizing erosion within steepened, convex knickzone reaches. Localized incision causes knickzone reaches to migrate upstream. Such migrating knickzones dictate the pace of landscape response to changes in tectonics or erosional efficiency and can help quantify the timing and source of base‐level fall. Identification of knickzones typically requires individual selection of steepened reaches: a process that is tedious and subjective and has no efficient means to measure knickzone size. We construct an algorithm to automate this procedure by selecting the bounds of knickzone reaches in a χ‐space (drainage‐area normalized) framework. An automated feature calibrates algorithm parameters to a subset of knickzones handpicked by the user. The algorithm uses these parameters as consistent criteria to identify knickzones objectively, and then the algorithm measures the height, length, and slope of each knickzone reach. We test the algorithm on 1, 10, and 30 m resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) of six catchments (trunk‐stream lengths: 2.1–5.4 km) on Santa Cruz Island, southern California. On the 1 m DEM, algorithm‐selected knickzones confirm 93% of handpicked knickzone positions (n = 178) to a spatial accuracy of ≤100 m, 88% to an accuracy within 50 m, and 46% to an accuracy within 10 m. Using 10 and 30 m DEMs, accuracy is similar: 88–86% to ≤100 m and 82% to ≤50 m (n = 38 and 36, respectively). The algorithm enables efficient regional comparison of the size and location of knickzones with geologic structures, mapped landforms, and hillslope morphology, thereby facilitating approaches to characterize the dynamics of transient landscapes.
