“…PROMs that possess high content validity and adequate measurement properties (construct validity, reliability) for the specific condition in question are generally more responsive than less adequate PROMs 20 . Therefore, it can be expected that more adequate PROMs are more likely to show a difference between treatments, if one exists.…”

“…It has been shown that PROMs developed and validated for the patient group and intervention in question are more responsive than PROMs that do not possess these qualities. 12 However, it has not been studied how this influences the results and conclusions of randomized treatment studies. In other words, how often do data from inappropriate PROMs lead to false conclusions because of type 1 or type 2 errors?…”

“…The responsiveness of various PROMs used in studies is in most cases not known and can therefore not be used as an argument for the choice of PROM. As high responsiveness is most importantly the result of the content and construct validity of the PROM, 34 a minimum requirement should be that PROMs are developed through feedback from the same patient group targeted in the planned study (ie, the PROM has high content validity for the actual study population) and are adequately validated with respect to its measurement properties (ie, has construct validity for the actual study population). 31,35 Cohen's ES relates the change in PROM score to the heterogeneity of the scores (ie, the variance of the PROM scores at baseline), thus assigning high responsiveness to PROMs that attain a narrow range of values.…”
