Knee joint ultrasonography of the ACLT rabbit experimental model of osteoarthritis: relevance and effectiveness in detecting meniscal lesions

Abstract: A significant relationship was found between ultrasonographic and macroscopic grading of meniscal injuries. US was both specific and sensitive in detecting meniscal lesions. We propose US as a non-invasive, non-expensive, in vivo imaging technique for preclinical studies in the ACLT rabbit OA model.

“…Moreover, in the 6-24 weeks post-surgical follow-up, the changes such as fibrosis of articular cartilage, loss of full-thickness articular cartilage and osteophyte formation can be observed in this rabbit ACLT model [35]. The imaging changes in ACLT-treated side articular cartilage or meniscus can be detected by ultrasound [36], microtomography (Micro-CT), or magnetic resonance (MR) [37]. In this study, we used ACLT method to establish the animal model of OA.…”

“…Anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) of the OA rabbit model was performed as described previously (Boulocher et al 2008;Jean et al 2008). Briefly, rabbits were intravenously anesthetized with 3% sodium pentobarbital (1 mL/kg).…”

“…To determine the feasibility of a radiographic grading system, three experienced readers reviewed 250 radiographs of rabbit left femorotibial joint from control and CCLT rabbits obtained during previous studies [40,50,51,54]. Subsequently they consensually constructed an original ROA semi-quantitative grading scale that separated joint space narrowing and osteophytosis [35].…”
