“…K. marxianus has become an attractive non-conventional yeast chassis cell factory due to its excellent industrial properties (Qiu et al 2023 ). Among various products that can be produced by K. marxianus , organic acids have received increasing interest, especially as monomers of bioplastics (Zhang et al 2023 ).…”

“…Last but not least, K. marxianus is genetically amenable, which makes it an attractive yeast cell factory. K. marxianus has been used to produce industrial enzymes, fuel ethanol, single-cell proteins, vaccines, the flavoring compound 2-phenylethanol, and lactic acid (Qiu et al 2023 ; Zhou et al 2018 ). For efficient production, it is required that the microbial strains are tolerant to various stress conditions that are relevant to industrial applications, which include high product concentration, low pH, or high temperature (Zhao et al 2016 ; Zhang et al 2023 ).…”

“…The FDA has classified this yeast expression host as GRAS. Compared with other yeast expression systems, K. lactis has the advantages of multicopy gene integration, no background gene expression during Escherichia coli cloning steps, easy genetic manipulation, availability of a fully sequenced genome, and high‐level and scalable expression of recombinant proteins (Qiu et al., 2023). This yeast has been efficiently used for expressing numerous proteins in recent years (Kim & Kim, 2016).…”

“…The nonconventional yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus has attractive characteristics for industrial applications, such as a high growth rate; thermotolerance; a broad spectrum of carbon sources utilization, including xylose, lactose, and inulin; and the ability to produce ethanol, aroma compounds, enzymes, vaccines, bioactive molecules, fructo-oligosaccharides, fatty acids, and single-cell proteins (SCP) [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. SCP, which are the proteins produced by various microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, algae, and fungi, are a source of easily digestible protein with a balanced amino acid composition.…”
