(1) Background: Environmental risks such as air pollutants pose a threat to human health and must be communicated to the affected population to create awareness, such as via health literacy (HL); (2) Methods: We analyzed HL in the context of environmental health risks, including sources of information and prior knowledge, in a sample from the German general population using Kendall’s rank correlations, regression analyses, and explorative parallel mediation analysis; (3) Results: The survey included 412 German participants aged between 18 and 77. HL was found to be problematic to inadequate. The internet, family and friends, and newspapers were the most frequently cited sources of information. Mobile apps were mostly unknown but were requested by sample subjects. Although subjects expressed environmental concerns and exhibited rather good levels of knowledge, the majority perceived no risk to human health and rated air quality quite positively. Knowledge on particulate matter, the term “ultrafine particles”, and protective measures was found to be rather low. HL was associated with the use of newspapers and commercials as sources of information. The relationship between age and HL is fully mediated by the use of newspapers and information from TV commercials; (4) Conclusions: HL should be promoted by raising awareness of the health effects of environmental pollutants. In particular, the information channels preferred by the affected population should be used and further information opportunities such as apps should be publicized, e.g., through campaigns. An improved HL can assist policy makers in creating a healthier environment by empowering individuals to become more environmentally aware and protect their own health. This, in turn, has the potential to reduce health-related costs.

ZusammenfassungKlimakrise und schwindende Biodiversität haben auch eine Bedeutung für die medizinische Rehabilitation in Deutschland. Rehabilitationseinrichtungen haben zum einen die Folgen der Naturzerstörung und des Wildtierhandels zu bewältigen, tragen zum anderen aber durch ihr Verhalten auch zur Erderwärmung und abnehmenden Artenvielfalt bei. National und international wurden in den letzten Jahrzehnten Handlungsstrategien entwickelt, um die Klimakrise auszubremsen und deren Folgen zu mildern. Rehabilitationseinrichtungen haben nur noch wenige Jahre Zeit, um ihren Anteil zu leisten, der irreversiblen Vernichtung unserer natürlichen Lebensgrundlagen entgegenzuwirken. Die Deutsche Rentenversicherung als Kosten- und Leistungsträger der medizinischen Rehabilitation kann die Rehabilitationseinrichtungen bei dieser großen Herausforderung finanziell und strategisch unterstützen. Gelingt die ökologische Transformation nicht, wird Krisenmanagement auch den Rehabilitationsalltag langfristig bestimmen.

ZusammenfassungDieser Beitrag geht der Frage nach, welche Auswirkungen der Klimawandel auf die Gesundheit haben kann und inwieweit versorgungsnahe Daten zur Forschung in diesem Themenfeld beitragen können. Der Klimawandel verändert die Umwelt- und Lebensbedingungen der Menschheit, er ist damit auch zu einem relevanten Gesundheitsproblem geworden. Die Zunahme von Extremwetterereignissen, Veränderungen bei der UV- und Luftschadstoffbelastung sowie die klimaassoziierte Verbreitung von Allergenen oder neuartigen Erregern verändern das Spektrum an Erkrankungen und den medizinischen Versorgungsbedarf in der Bevölkerung erheblich. Allerdings liegen bislang nur wenige Erkenntnisse zu den Folgen für das Gesundheitssystem und zu besonders betroffenen Bevölkerungsgruppen in Deutschland vor. Versorgungsnahe Daten (Primärdaten, Registerdaten, Sekundärdaten) in Verbindung mit Umweltexpositionsdaten und modulierenden Daten (z. B. sozioökonomische Daten) haben das Potenzial, die Forschung zu den gesundheitlichen Folgen des Klimawandels erheblich voranzubringen. Dieser Beitrag benennt die Veränderungen der Umwelt- und Lebensbedingungen sowie der damit verbundenen gesundheitlichen Risiken. Er beschreibt die Datengrundlagen, die grundsätzlich zur Analyse gesundheitlicher Auswirkungen des Klimawandels zur Verfügung stehen. An einem konkreten Beispiel wird aufgezeigt, wie die Zusammenführung von individuellen Gesundheitsdaten (hier GKV-Abrechnungsdaten), Umweltexpositionsdaten und modulierenden Daten gelingen kann. Der Beitrag bietet abschließend eine umfassende Übersicht über offene Forschungsfragen, die mit versorgungsnahen Daten beantwortet werden können.
