Windgefegte und karge, einmal kalte unh feuchte, ein anderes Ma1 heii3e und trockene Lebensraume haben eines gemeinsam:Sie sind der Lebensraum von Polsterpflanzen.Es gibt sie im Hochgebirge (Abbildungen 1 und 3), auf antarktischen Inseln (Abbildung 2), in Steppen und in Wiisten (Abbildung 4). emeint sind hier die echten G Polsterpflanzen, wie Werner Rauh [5] sie definierte; Pflanzen, die auch im . Gewachshaus oder vom Gletscherwasser ins Xefland verspult, ihren polsterformigen Wuchs beibehaltenalso genotypische Polster. Im Gegensatz d a m verlieren von Weidetieren polsterformig ,,geformte" Pflan-Zen beim Aussetzen der Beweidung sofort ihre Polsterform: Dies sind von der Umwelt geformte Polster, phanotypische Polster. Auffallig ist, dai3 Polsterpflan-Zen in windarmen Gegenden, beispielsweise in tropischen Hochgebirgen, weitgehend fehlen. In polaren Regionen sind sie auf der Sudhalbkugel mit den vie1 hoheren Windgeschwindigkeiten wesentlich haufiger anzutreffen als im Norden. Unter Abb. 1. Das ,,klassische" Halbkugelpolster: Silene exscapa (Caryophyllaceae), Zentralalpen, Tirol (2600 m). windarmen Bedingungen uberwiegen die Nachteile des gedrungenen Wuchses dessen Vorteile. Geschlossene Pflanzendecken wie Rasen und Walder entwickeln iiblicherweise einen Blattflachenindex von 4 bis 8 m2 Blattflache pro m2 Boden. Polsterpflanzen bringen es auf der von ihnen besetzten Grundflache nur auf einen Blattflachenindex von 1 bis maximal 2 mz pro m2 [2]. Damit sind diese Pflanzen, sobald gunstigere Wachstumsbedingungen herrschen, hoffnungslos unterlegen und werden ver-drangt. Die wegen ihrer Symmetrie auffalligsten Polster sind Halbkugelpolster mit einer Pfahlwurzel, deren griine Kuppel sich durch endstandiges Triebwachstum jahrlich nur um wenige Millimeter vergroi3ert. Worin liegt der Vorteil dieser Lebensform? In alpinen und subpolaren Lebensraumen mit Niederschlagsiiberschufi hat der polsterformige Wuchs sicher nichts mit Wassermangel zu tun. Die in diesen Lebensraumen vorherrschenden Kompaktpolster stellen ein nahezu geschlossenes Okosystem dar, Inseln hoher biologischer Aktivitat in meist steiniger, bodenarmer Umgebung. Einmal dem Substrat abgerungen, werden mineralische Nahrstoffe nicht mehr aus dem Verfiigungsraum der Pflanze abgegeben. Die Blatt-und Triebgeneration des Vorsommers wird durch streng apikales (spitzenbetontes) Wachstum unzahliger, dicht gepackter Triebe jahrlich wieder um einige Millimeter i i b e mchert. Dadurch entsteht ein ganz privater ,,Komposthaufen". Kein Sturm verweht abgestorbene Pflanzenteile und damit die darin gebundenen mineralischen Nahrstoffe; das Polster wirkt wie eine Nahrstoff-Falle. Die reiche Mikroflora und -fauna im Inneren der Polster sorgt fur den Abbau. Die mikrobielle Aktivitat unter Posterpflanzen kann 13mal hoher sein als die im umliegenden Boden [6]. Bei vielen Arten dringen Adventivwurzeln sogar in das feucht-modrige Innere des Polsters ein. Auf diese Weise kommen die lebenswichtigen Mineralstoffe wieder in die aktive Wachstumszone, ohne jemals in den Mineralboden zuriickzugel...

The article examines interactions between closely spaced clonal tree groups (spruce, fir, mountain birch) and dense tree clusters and their environment with special regard to Northern Europe, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains. Modification of wind velocity and direction, trapping blowing snow and eolian dust, ground-shading and the release of sensible heat to the immediate vicinity ('black-body effect') are the main direct feedback effects of grouped trees on site conditions. Under long-lived clonal groups, soil physical and chemical properties gradually change. Clonal groups also leave their marks in geomorphic micro-structures. Compact groups may facilitate establishment of tree seedlings by providing shelter. Under global warming, the existing clonal groups above the forest limit may act as 'new' sources of viable seed that facilitate infilling of gaps in the treeline ecotone and the establishment of new tree populations above the present tree limit. On the other hand, increased deposition of snow as a result of the presence of tree groups may affect seedling establishment, and thereby overrule the positive effects of climate warming. If climate warming continues, current spatial structures, surface roughness, albedo, and snow distribution pattern, along with the resulting effects of these factors, will change across the entire ecotone. The feedback effects of closely spaced clonal groups will spatially overlap. Thus, it will be hard to distinguish between the effects of the single groups when new trees become established within the existing gaps. The northward shift of the polar treeline ecotone might contribute to heating of the lower atmosphere. On steep high-mountain slopes, however, no similar effects can be expected because of the limited size of the lower alpine area that has the potential to become covered with new forest and tree stands.
