Kleine–Levin Syndrome: History and Brief Review

Abstract: Episodic hypersomnia, compulsive excessive eating and erotic behaviour, with schizophrenic-like mental symptoms are the hallmarks of the rare Kleine–Levin syndrome. This paper traces the origins of its description back to the 18th century and the changing concepts of its complex organic-psychogenic aetiology. The eventual, spontaneous disappearance of the syndrome is unexplained.

“…Usually affecting adolescent males, episodes normally last up to a few weeks and terminates with total and spontaneous recovery. Possibly first reported by Brierre de Bosmont in 1862, the condition however received its name from Willi Kleine who, in 1925, reported a series of cases of periodic hypersomnia and also Max Levin who described a case of periodic hypersomnia and excessive appetite in 1930 2. Since then, only 186 cases were reported in America, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia in particular India, Japan, Taiwan, China and Pakistan 3.…”
