Background: Burns represent one of the major health problems in India. Epidemiological study is the first step in planning preventive and management strategies. Objective: To study some of the important epidemiological factors in relation to burn cases at a tertiary care level teaching hospital in rural area. Methods: Present study was retrospective study of all burn injury cases admitted at tertiary care level teaching hospital situated in rural area. The information obtained was tabulated analyzed using the software GraphPad Instat. Mean, median, and standard deviation (SD) were calculated where applicable. Chi-square test was used as a test of significance. Results: Overall female burn patients were significantly higher than male (χ2= 6.480, p = 0.01). Majority of female patients (68.64%) had total burn surface area more than 35% whereas 48.70% of the male patients had a total burn surface area more than 35% (χ2= 7.99, p = 0.005). Superficial to deep burns were present in 97% of patients. Majority (80%) of the burn injuries were allegedly accidental. Thermal burn was the commonest cause of burn followed by scalds. In majority of the patients (91.8%) burns were caused by flame occurred at home. Conclusion: Most of the time lack of safety measures is an important cause for burn. The most important step is public education on safer first-aid practices, availability of good burn care facilities in all public institutions as near to the place of accident as possible.

Aim: To assess the pattern, demand and opinion of dowry among women in urban Karachi, Pakistan and their perceived negative consequences of dowry. Setting: Pakistan is a low income country, predominantly Muslim, with around 190 million inhabitants. Karachi is the biggest city with roughly 13 million inhabitants. Method: Qualitative study, using content analysis of five focus group discussions with women. Results: The theme "Dowry practices and their consequences" emerged, along with five categories and 14 subcategories, describing the "burden of dowry", "dowry in society", "dowry problems created by parents-in-law", "negative consequences of dowry practice" and "good intentions". Conclusion: Problems due to dowry practices are something which women of all socioeconomic classes in Karachi are aware of. A number of negative consequences of these practices create a current, pressing problem in Karachi society. These consequences affect women's status and their possibilities to grow and educate themselves. It seems that change is being brought on slowly, following the country's development and increasing educational level of the younger generation. Awareness of dowry issues needs to be raised and steps need to be taken to speed up this process of change by empowering women and ensuring equality in Pakistan.

There are an estimated 7 million burn injuries in India annually, of which 700,000 require hospital admission and 140,000 are fatal. According to the National Burns Programme, 91,000 of these deaths are women; a figure higher than that for maternal mortality. Women of child bearing age are on average three times more likely than men to die of burn injuries. This paper reviews the existing literature on burn injuries in India and raises pertinent issues about prevalence, causes and gaps in recognising the gendered factors leading to a high number of women dying due to burns. The work of various women's groups and health researchers with burns victims raises several questions about the categorisation of burn deaths as accident, suicide and homicide and the failure of the health system to recognise underlying violence. Despite compelling evidence, the health system has not recognised this as a priority. Considering the substantial cost of burns care, prevention is the key which requires health systems to recognise the linkages between burn injuries and domestic violence. Health systems need to integrate awareness programmes about domestic violence and train health professionals to identify signs and symptoms of violence. This would contribute to early identification of abuse so that survivors are able to access support services at an early stage.
