Kinorhyncha from the Caribbean, with the description of two new species from Puerto Rico and Barbados

Abstract: Two new kinorhynch species from Puerto Rico (Greater Antilles) and Barbados (Lesser Antilles) are described herein from Dr R. P. Higgins unexamined Caribbean meiofaunal samples, which have been stored in the Smithsonian Institution collections. The species from Puerto Rico, Cristaphyes cornifrons sp. nov., belongs to the class Allomalorhagida, whereas the species from Barbados, Echinoderes barbadensis sp. nov., belongs to the class Cyclorhagida. Cristaphyes cornifrons sp. nov. is easily distinguished from most… Show more

“…Glandular cell outlets type 2: the presence and positions of glandular cell outlets type 2 has become an important character in modern echinoderid taxonomy (see e.g., Neuhaus & Blasche 2006;Sørensen et al 2012Sørensen et al , 2018Pardos et al 2016aPardos et al , 2016bCepeda et al 2019a;. Among species of the E. dujardinii group we consistently find minute glandular cell outlets type 2 in laterodorsal or midlateral positions of segment 8, and in those with short middorsal spines (except for E. songae Sørensen & Chang sp.…”

“…The spine and tube pattern of Echinoderes sp. 2, with presence of middorsal spines on segments 4 to 8, tubes/spines in lateroventral positions of segments 5 to 9, tubes in lateral accessory position on segment 8 and in laterodorsal position on segment 10, is shared with 7 species (Yamasaki et al, 2020) (Higgins, 1978;G a Ordóñez et al, 2008;Herranz et al, 2014;Pardos et al, 2016;Yamasaki et al, 2018b;Cepeda et al, 2019a;Sørensen et al, 2020). “…After the rearrangement of the classification system based on the recent molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses, 11 families are recognized in the phylum (Sørensen et al ., 2015). Among the families, Echinoderidae represents the most speciose family, comprised of five genera and about 150 species (Sørensen et al ., 2015; Sánchez et al ., 2019; Varney et al ., 2019; Yamasaki et al ., 2019; Cepeda et al ., 2019 a , 2019 b , 2019 c ). Kinorhynch families, genera and some species-groups comprised of closely related species are distributed worldwide (Neuhaus, 2013; Randsø et al ., 2019).…”
