Kinetics study of barium sulphate surface scaling and inhibition with a once-through flow system

Abstract: The deposition and subsequent growth of inorganic scale on completion equipment is a major problem within the oil and gas industry. An in-situ flow cell was designed to investigate barium sulphate surface fouling on stainless steel. The set-up allows realtime analysis of the formation of scale as well as following various scaling parameters such as the surface coverage or number and size of crystals growing on the surface. The experimental results were fitted to a diffusion-controlled crystallisation based mod… Show more

“…In oilfield operations, the most commonly adopted approach in controlling scale threat is to apply chemical scale inhibitors (Zhang P. et al, 2015;Bukuaghangin et al, 2016;Liu Y. et al, 2016). Scale inhibitors are a class of specialty chemicals, which can kinetically delay mineral scale formation and subsequent precipitation (Wang et al, 2013(Wang et al, , 2014Zhang et al, 2019c).…”

“…Scale formation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and in daily life. However, massive scale formation and subsequent precipitation can lead to throughput reduction and eventually pipe/conduit blockage in various industrial processes (Bukuaghangin et al, 2016;Ghaderi et al, 2009;Jordan et al, 2012;Kan and Tomson, 2012;Lecerf et al, 2005;Rostami et al, 2019;Vazquez et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2018b). Scale associated operational issues are particularly challenging in oilfield operations and especially in deepwater productions (Fink, 2011).…”

“…It has been discussed in a number of recent studies that thermodynamics and kinetics are two key aspects of the scale deposition process (Bukuaghangin et al, 2016;Sanni et al, 2017;Zhang et al, 2018aZhang et al, , 2019. Thermodynamic studies aim at understanding the extent of scale saturation and the amount of scale solid precipitated.…”
