Kinetics of the hydrobromination of 10-undecenoic acid

Abstract: The kinetics of the reaction between 10-undecenoic acid and hydrogen bromide solution in toluene initiated by benzoyl peroxide was studied in a batch reactor in the temperature range 0-30 °C. The effects of temperature, initiator concentration, and initial mole ratio of HBr to 10-undecenoic acid on the yield of 11-bromoundecanoic acid and reaction rates were experimentally investigated. This reaction was found to exhibit "limiting conversion" behavior in the range of variables studied. A plausible explanation … Show more

“…[90,91] The 11-amino-UA monomer 84 is produced by anti-Markovnikov addition of HBr to UA 1 and subsequent reaction with NH 3 . [92] A detailed kinetic study of the hydrobromination of UA by a HBr solution in toluene with BPO was carried out by Bhagwat et al [93] Polymerization can be done continuously or in a discontinuous fashion without a catalyst, but elevated temperatures and a vacuum are necessary to remove residual water from the work-up and the water formed during the reaction (Scheme 20). [90] Several odd-odd (11 11, 9 11, 7 11, 5 11, and 3 11) and evenodd (2 11, 4 11, 6 11, 8 11, 10 11, and 12 11) nylons were synthesized starting from undecanedioic acid through step-heating melt polycondensation with different diamines.…”
