Kinetics of the esterification between lactic acid and isoamyl alcohol in the presence of silica gel‐supported sodium hydrogen sulphate

Abstract: The esterification reaction between isoamyl alcohol and lactic acid was studied over silica gel-supported sodium hydrogen sulphate (NaHSO 4 Á Silica). The influences of the external mass transfer, internal mass transfer, reaction temperature, catalyst loading, and initial reactant molar ratio were investigated. Kinetic experimental data of this esterification reaction obtained at different temperatures (343-378 K) were correlated with three models (the pseudo-homogeneous (PH), Eley-Rideal (ER), and Langmuir-Hi… Show more

“…Isoamyl dl -lactate (CAS 19329-89-6), colorless and transparent, is a green solvent widely used in the food, coating, petroleum, and medical industries. , It can be obtained by esterification of lactic acid and isoamyl alcohol, , and its boiling point at normal pressure is 475.55 K, which was obtained from Syracuse Research Corporation of Syracuse. Unfortunately, there is only one literature source revealing that the boiling point of isoamyl dl -lactate is 369.15–373.15 K at 23 Torr, and the thermodynamic properties have not been studied so far.…”

“…In our previous work, we designed a novel efficient catalyst for the esterification of lactic acid with isoamyl alcohol, and as the first step of RD process development, we also studied the reaction kinetics of esterification. 15 For the proper design of a RD column, the thermodynamic properties such as multicomponent vapor− liquid equilibrium (VLE) are required.…”

“…Removal of water (aqueous layer) from the azeotropic composition and recycling back the alcohol through the organic layer to the reaction mixture leads to an enhancement in the conversion. In our previous work, we designed a novel efficient catalyst for the esterification of lactic acid with isoamyl alcohol, and as the first step of RD process development, we also studied the reaction kinetics of esterification . For the proper design of a RD column, the thermodynamic properties such as multicomponent vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) are required.…”

“…Heterogeneously catalyzed esterification takes place in the manner of adsorption of one or both of the reactants on the surface of catalyst, reaction on the surface sites, and desorption of the product from the surface of catalyst 28 . This mechanism can be described by the P‐H model, E‐R model, and L‐H model.…”

“…The L‐H model assumes that all the reactant molecules get adsorbed on the surface of catalyst where the reaction takes place, whereas the E‐R model assumes that the reaction takes place between adsorbed and unadsorbed molecules of the reactants. The reaction mechanisms for P‐H and L‐H models are reported in the literature 28,29 …”
