Kinetics of the Ce3+/BrO2-Reaction in Sulfuric Acid Medium

Abstract: The reaction of Ce3+ with BrO2 in sulfuric acid solution (which is the starting step in the inorganic reaction subset of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky-reaction) is followed spectroscopically in a reaction mixture containing BrO2 at constant concentration. From first order kinetics (Br02 in excess) the rate constant for this reaction is evaluated.

“…ClO 2 , it has never been isolated. It has been detected in matrices, by microwave, and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and it has been postulated as a central intermediate in the Belousov–Zhabotinsky oscillating reaction . We often observed violet solutions in our reactions, although always for only a short period of time.…”

“…Ce3+ + Br02 + H+ *± Ce4+ + HBr02 (R6) It must be pointed out that for reaction R6 only the forward rate constant k6 was obtained from a direct experiment. 5 The reverse rate constant k-t as given in ref 2, however, was deduced from indirect thermodynamic data only. The first investigators who followed (R-6) in a direct kinetic experiment (stopped flow technique) were Sullivan and Thompson.…”

“…ClO 2 konnte es bis heute nicht isoliert werden. Dieses konnte in Matrizen, durch Mikrowellen‐ und UV/Vis‐Spektren nachgewiesen werden, und es wurde als zentrales Zwischenprodukt der oszillierenden Beluosov‐Zhabotinsky‐Reaktion postuliert . Wir haben bei unseren Reaktionen oft eine violette Farbe beobachtet, aber immer nur für sehr kurze Zeit.…”
