Kinetics of syntrophic acetogenesis in a saline medium

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The anaerobic degradation kinetics of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in a saline (24 g NaCl dm −3 ) and mesophilic (37 • C) medium was studied under batch test conditions. The acetate production kinetics without inhibition by propionic, butyric and valeric acids was determined. The inhibition of acetate production during syntrophic acetogenesis by VFA and pH was studied. The acetogenesis without inhibition was modelled using a Monod equation. The pH inhibition was represented by a Michaelis pH function… Show more

“…Parameter estimation was performed using nonlinear regression techniques based on the Levenberg–Marquardt least‐squares minimization algorithm . To verify the goodness of fit to the proposed mathematical model, two statistical metrics were used, the traditional coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE).…”

“…In the original AM, acetogenesis of HVa and HBu is performed by different microorganism groups; however given that the kinetics of both processes in a saline, mesophilic environment are similar , the model can be simplified by assuming that HVa and HBu are degraded by a single microorganism group (Batstone et al, 2002). The kinetics used for the acetogenic steps were obtained from Huiliñir et al (2008).…”

“…A pH lower than 6 and higher than 9 can inhibit both the acetogenic stage (Campos and Flotats, 2003;Huiliñir et al, 2008) and the denitrification process (Estuardo et al, 2008). Furthermore, the pH affects the non-dissociated fraction of NH 3 , which in turn inhibits the methanogenic stage.…”
